Congratulations, Jeff.
Steve, Chris, Ian, apparently, Jim Cato - everyone is leaving - probably first due to the move to Bluffton - after all - they moved to Beaufort, not Bluffton!
Next, when a company goes into shrink mode there is little opportunity and morale suffers - so it is not a surprise that the old guard is out.
Steve was the moving force behind the blogs - I wonder if they'll wither too - most places use Topix or some third party provider . . . it would be ez to switch and lose the personal feel and easy search columns here . . .
That's a little harsh, don't you think?
The Gazette newsroom's move to Bluffton, which will happen next month, had nothing to do with any of these decisions. The reporters and photographers are going to be covering their beats in northern Beaufort County as they always have. The rest of us will have a longer commute, but the product will remain the same.
My decision was very difficult and was far more personal than professional. As much as I love Beaufort - and I truly do - I love my kids more, and I'm leaving of my own accord. I'll be here through Nov. 7.
This paper is going to be around for a long time, though the shift in emphasis from print to online almost certainly will continue and probably will accelerate in the coming years.
My comments were a little sarcastic - sorry if you misunderstood - definitely tongue in cheek.
Beaufort will miss you and I am sure you will miss Beaufort and I hope you sell your house! Its a tough market out there!
I for one am sorry to see you go. The same for Chris and Jim and Ian and everyone else moving along with their careers -
Definitely spend time with the kids, and grandkids if you got 'em, cause one day you stick your head up when you have kids and they're teens and could care less about you except as a source of Jacksons . . . then they move away and you really miss having the chaos around.
Seriously, congratulations on the promotion to real life - to you Steve. And to th others moving on, thanks for sharing, come back and say hello as a 'regular blogger' some time. We would like to hear from you!
My ideas on news in the online age are pay per view. You get the news with the ads and can get a password which gets you the stories for the same price as the subscription - the advertizers what your eyes, no matter where they are!
Good bye and good luck on your move Mr. Blust. It is nice to hear that your family is more importent then your job. I want to thank you for allowing me to be a guest editer when you first started the progrom. It was a very enjoyable and eductional week. May you have a save and blessed trip.
Mr Cato... I wish you the best!!! You too mr Blust!!!!
Also congratz to all who are moving up :)
It'll be weird, I don't remember a Beaufortgazette without Mr Cato, but time goes on. You'll be missed guys
We will miss S Blust whose work ethic and manner has been great. Too bad he wasn't here 10 years ago! One has to suspect that ad revenue for McClatchy drives decisions - i.e., consolidation of offices, print facility in Bluffton, etc. The only reason for two papers is ad revenue, not news. They can charge more with two papers and still get ads - then what they would have to charge for one paper, at least at this point in time. But the die is cast - we should anticipate a general front section with small local edition inside. S Blust leaving lets this happen under Borton's Bluffton-based Packet team. Watch and see irrespective of the refutations of those departing or staying. The economics demand it.
I thought that would get ya.... I think I may actually miss the Blog Sheriff, will the new Blog Mercenaries allow me to call people names? If not the change is useless to me. Just Kidding, Maybe with the shift closer to the Republican Center of Beaufort (Sun City) we may get more fair and balanced reporting. If only PapaBear had bought the Gazette, then we'd have smooth sailing and all the good news we could take. BTW, I hope everyone finds what they are looking for and is happy in their new roads.
I love newpapers, I thrive on the news. It is no secret that I have been a strong rival of the Gazette for the last four four years, and it is also no secret as to why.
Jim Cato was running the show when the problem between me and them started, but had been replaced before I requested retractions of their original erronious story. They ignored me! He however is a good man and a great journalist, I will miss him greatly!
Steve Blust is a man that I will miss even more. Steve has taken as lot of heat from me and has always responded in a totally professional manner. He IS what journalism should be about, and I have come to think of him as a friend. I will truly miss him!!!! I don't want to say "I told you so" but everything I have predicted and said to him over the past three years is coming true! It's a damned shame, but it is happening. McClatchy has placed their bets on the wrong side of the river, and they will lose as a result! They have also lost a few really great folks who worked for them and could have made the difference between survival and doom!!!!!
Sorry to see any of y'all leave, we will miss you!!! Good luck to all y'all!!!!
Scooter
...IS the Beaufort Gazette, so the comments that it won't be the same are more than accurate, unfortunately. He will be missed, but I suspect he find many ways to contribute in Beaufort and beyond. So God speed, and thanks for all your hard work.
by expressing my deep appreciation for all the departing members of the Gazette management team, particularly Jim Cato, who hired a snot-nosed punk named Jeff Kidd back in 1992 and looked past his occasional mistakes and frequent over-exuberance because he saw some potential underneath. (I swear to God this will be the last time I refer to myself in the third person.) Jim has been a mentor and friend to me during the past 16 years. I would wish him a happy retirement, but I suspect dimples is correct — Jim won't be slowing down; he'll seek other ways to serve this community.
I haven't known Steve Blust nearly so long and never actually worked for him. But I think he's done a wonderful job during his tenure at the Gazette, and I deeply appreciate the advice and encouragement he has given to me. That he would offer them to someone who is not even in his employ tells you a lot about the man. Funny, Steve and Jim have different personalities, but I can say the same thing about them each — both are good editors and even better people.
And, of course, I would be remiss if I didn't doff my cap to Chris and Ian, who also have done fine work at the Gazette and who have been good friends to my wife and me.
Believe me when I say I'm awed by the prospect of having to fill such shoes. Believe me, too, when I say I can't wait to get started.
