County puts stop to ID requirement to pay taxes

BLUFFTON -- As a general rule, Beaufort County wants to make paying taxes as easy as possible. Read the story here.

Player was trying to make the point that if people didn't have a drivers license, they shouldn't be driving to the auditor's office to pay their taxes, Tanner said.

Actually, a good point Sheriff Tanner, and an idea that should be supported.......... state wide. Isn't getting un-licensed drivers off our roads in the best interests of the community?..........the same un-licensed drivers probably are un-insured as well.

last year I left for longer than I though originally. I left insurance on my car and my taxes became due about 3 months before I got back. I sent someone to pay them for me so I wouldn't be late. What happens then? They have a computer there.

What about the people who still have a hard copy driver's liscence, even though they have lost the privilegde to drive through the courts?
Wouldn't it be worth it for the tax department to network, like the internet here, to other agencies like the DMV??? Then the agency can check for it's self.
and if they want to be helpful; if you are paying taxes why don't they do a current warrant check to see if you are wanted by the police for anyhting.

I like the idea of enforcing the requirement to have ALL personnel show their driver license. We show SC driver license to vote, why not to pay taxes, and register vehicles? Ops, we don't want to be politically incorrect.

...pro-criminal.

It seems to me that a vehicle and a driver's license would kinda go together. You would want one to have to go with the other and visa versa.

Yet, Sheriff Tanner doesn't seem to mind un-licensed drivers which also means un-insured.

Further, Tanner has recently proposed dropping criminal charges for illegals. And he is the Sheriff?

I propose that we have drug testing for public officials in Beaufort County. Let's start with the Sheriff first.

When I was first reading this article I thought they were doing this to weed out illegals, which I thought was odd because how many illegal aliens would be showing up to pay taxes on property or automobiles. Then I read further down and realized all of this was for an entirely different reason, dreamed up by a Sheriff’s deputy who has his head up his behind.

Quote:
Tanner said requiring an in-state driver’s license was not an attempt to unfairly target Hispanic vehicle owners and was the result of misguided diligence on Player’s part.

Player was trying to make the point that if people didn’t have a drivers license, they shouldn’t be driving to the auditor’s office to pay their taxes, Tanner said.

Could they not walk to the auditor’s office to pay their taxes? Could they not take a bus? Could they not get a ride? It’s pretty clear here that Player is just a bully with a badge and an inflated ego. He is not a legislator and had no lawful authority to enforce this requirement. He ought to be prosecuted.

Quote:
Neal mistakenly and improperly gave bad information to the auditor’s clerks and that information was brought to Sharon Burris’ attention,” Tanner said.

There was no mistake here. The man lied.

My sentiments exactly. Do you really think the County really would turn down money if you did not present your driver's license? I think not!

What if I asked someone else to pay my taxes for me...beacause of some unforseen reason; in the hospital, out of town or just unable to get to the tax office?? Would you have to pay the taxes in person if the DL was required?

Only a bonehead would say this man has his head up his behind, an inflated ego and call him a liar when they don't even know the man or the ENTIRE truth about the whole matter. Neal is being thrown under the bus just a tad here and is being made to look like he's the creator and instigator and bad guy in all this. This is precisely why NO ONE should EVER believe anything that the news media has to say because they only say what gets people's attention and NEVER tells the whole truth.

People who do NOT have a valid driver's license should NOT be driving ANY vehicle on ANY street in ANY county in ANY city in ANY state for ANY reason, period. You buy a car, you need it registered, you get a friend to take you. I completely agree with what he was doing and the reason behind it. Shame on you Mr. Tanner...way to stand behind your deputies!

I have been in the Bluffton office several times. I have seen the older woman in there turn Hispanics away several times because they don't have a SC driver's license. That is discrimination where I come from and I can't believe Sharon Burris would allow that to go on in her office. What if the county got sued for that?? It's our tax money that would pay for it. I think she should be fired.

Why do you want people driving around, who can't qualify for a drivers license.......who's side are you on? ps...the folks that can't produce a license probably don't have insurance either.

That Beaufort sucks. Deputy Player was put there to keep himself out of trouble. Now he may get the county sued for racism. Not to mention possible sanctions from the state for preventing tax collections. I have paid property taxes for other people and was never asked to show ID, but I'm White.

Hey Tanner, assign Player to watching dispatch or get rid of him.
