Sheriff proposes a 'tent city' detention center to relieve crowded jail

Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner said erecting a tent city, “Camp Beaufort” may be the county’s best option to immediately deal with overcrowding in the Beaufort County Detention Center. Read the story here.

Suits me... but would they have AC, cable, and a weight room? I guess if they (the crooks, not the liberals- they don't like anything!) don't like it they can 1) not break the law or 2) leave Beaufort county...
Tomato season is over. Sheriff Tanner could find a field for his tent city. And no cable, no A/C, no weight room, no library, do your time. Any work details should be road clean up crews only, none of this working in files storage with A/C. Make it hard so they don't want to come back.
However your post could only apply to those who have been tried and found guilty and serving their sentence here. Otherwise you have innocent folks being somewhat mistreated. An exception, I could support however, would be incarcerated IDS (Immigrants of Dubious Status). A good camp out would do them just fine just before the long bus ride.
Just an idea.
Otherwise, this is definitely a textbook case of incomplete and irresponsible reporting.
I wonder how many more moments before all the human rights interest groups get this and start lambasting us, the south, and everyone else. Of course then it will make headline news and make us all look like idiots from the south. Although, we who are actually from the south, had absolutely nothing to do with this blurb, whatsoever.
THis is not a Tanner-original concept:

There are many articles on this Az. sheriff.

This isn't Arizona and the link you provided contains a complete story.

Where would this "tent city" be located?
Why would it be established in the first place?
How could it be erected, maintained and be humane?
What is the timeline before it would be ready to inhabit?
At least we have the "who."
YOu need to ask Tanner those questions.
I am quite aware this is not Arizona; however, you *implied* (not stated) in your post that people would look down on this as us being stupid southerners. That was the crux for my comment about it not being a Tanner original.

The reporter should have, not I.
And as far as your "crux," I made a statement which you interpreted to be an implication, seemingly, to give yourself a reason to hop on the nearest soapbox in an attempt to chastise me.
When does school start back?
Too bad our Marines and Soldiers didn't know where they were going to be located when they erected their tent city. They also maintain this city. Any of us Americans who think about them on a daily basis, knows that they don't always live in humane conditions or when they might be harmed or killed. Remember they don't have jail guards to keep them safe and feed them. The prisoners whether illegal or just plain criminals or behind on child support need to do what's right or serve the time. Learn from your mistakes, some of us have one way or another. Unless your perfect. Our troops volunteered and don't deserve to be forgotten while they live in such inhumane, uninhabitable tents with no timline as you call them.

It is not a *southern* idea, so we couldn't look like "idiots from the south." (South)

I suppose it all depends upon where one has learned English.
South is capitalized when referring to the region; it is lower case when referring to directions. That is standard English.

In which stylebook?
It's been in every grammar handbook we've used in 20 years.
What's your source?

(From Webster's New Riverside Dictionary by Hough Mifflin) All you have to do is google when to capitalize south and you'll get websites.

Where did I say, "Grammar?"
You're slipping big time. It doesn't matter whether one uses the word stylebook or grammar book. The grammar point is made: South

Or off my back.
What's your big problem with me?
You come out of the woodwork like some screeching gargoyle.
What did I do to you?
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
back at ya! You're the one who questioned what stylebook I used to capitalize South.

Do you see a Chihuahua?
MotherNature - would The Bedford Handbook, Fifth Edition, suit your definition of stylebook? If so, please refer to page 514 of this edition and its explanations of proper nouns. In fact, The Bedford Handbook uses the example of "the South" as a proper noun.

LOL!!!
It's in the "developing story" column----should be more to come. Maybe your questions will be answered.

Developing stories shouldn't always be posted with such limited information. You, as an instructor, should at least appreciate that.
Well, you SHOULD.
*I* understand that a *developing story* is just that. Now, if it had appeared in the regular news column, I would question it.
Why so testy?

Because I make a comment first thing on a beautiful, Lowcountry morning and then one of the lemons, (of which you would belong), hops in and tries to ruin it, not only for me, also for everyone else.
How does it feel to be so bitter that you have to attack others out-of-hand? Sure must be a lonely existence.
Just how many cats do you have? Aside from yourself, of course.
Watch out, your mouth is liable to freeze that way... .

And what, exactly, is wrong with that?
Goodness, I'm glad my kids are out of the Beaufort "educational" system.
There is nothing wrong with that statement except that you basically denied it.

Explain this statement.
I will when you cite your source (stylebook if you want) for south not being capitalized as a region. An online source is preferable so we can see it.

Take your own advice.
You profess to be so intelligent.
Google it.
It may take you a while to figure it out, if you do at all.
Though, I'm sure that whatever you find, or don't, you'll find a way to rationalize it all.
Great educator, yeah, right.
You are pitiful as you spout garbage with nothing to back it up.
As far as a "great educator"--you're d--- right I am and I have the test scores to prove it, lady.
That statement alone shows your ignorance as you know NOTHING about my teaching. That's always what someone on here says when they've been bested.

A long time ago.
Aside from that, I've been reading your wise comments on here for years.
Less than impressive.
JMHO.
Once again, to pull out an old chestnut: If it's good enough for our troops in the field it's good enough for prisoners. Even human rights groups like amnesty international have conceded that point.
Must be the Southern troops in Iraq that live in tents. Everyone else lives in air conditioned bunkers with weights, TV and running water.
Do you have a problem with treating convicts like convicts? Isn't the primary goal of jail to punish? What's the problem? Keep them in tents, work their butts off doing labor, feed 'em bologna sandwiches, and hopefully our recidivism rate plummets and or they leave the area when they (the cons) get out... If that disturbs your karma or upsets your sensibilities, so be it. You sound like a typical liberal... go wring your hands somewhere else.

LOL!!
Good grief, how can one possibly form an opinion, as have you two, with no story to read?
Dang, I must be in the south... .
Come on you all, you can't possibly form an opinion on just what has been written. Can you?
God protect us if this is the case with the majority.
Maybe this would work,if we have a problem with overcrowding, then why don't we ship the prisoners, that have been put in jail for one thing or another,to fight for our freedom over in Iraq or other hot spots? They can give them guns but not a lot of ammo, and let them fight and see how it goes. That way we can bring back our boys and girls, who are not in jail, home to their families and love ones, mmmm sounds like a good idea? Oh yea, they will not be able to come back to the states and if they do survive then they can stay there and try to live there for the rest of their time.I understand that they have all the tents set up over there and are ready to go!! So hey Mr. Tanner, your idea may be just right, but not HERE !!! You know what I mean???

ok, not that we don't have enough problems with our men and women over there now. You know when these people come back from Iraq.... most of them suffer from no tjust physical problems, but huge mental problems!!!!! (ptsd, not tyring to say anything bad about our armed forces... but it's true)
Now, you take someone in jail, someone you know off the rip has bad judgment and send him over there. That's as bad as recruiters standing up in court for person who did a home invasion and getting that person out to join, which I have seen right here in general sessions the last time I was there. tent city a?
now umm.... well, I guess I'll wait for the rest of the story
Zoo brought up a good point. The Marine Corp used to have a significant number of men in it who were given a choice by the judge........jail or the Marine Corp.
But other than that point, I'm not sure why people are comparing members of the military to convicted criminals? I realize that it is a convenient comparison, but isn't it actually "apples and oranges?" For example, members of the military not only join, but they also get paid for the job that they are doing.
The good old days of the military draft are but a distant memory.
I think that this is a good idea and I hope that Sheriff Tanner takes a page from Sheriff Joe Arapaio of the Maricopa County AZ sheriffs office. Sheriff Arapaio said jail isn't supposed to be comfortable or fun, and I agree. You are there to serve to pay a debt to society for breaking the laws of that society. I just wish they would bring back chain gangs. Imagine all the projects that could get done at a significant savings to the taxpayer.
Our LE folks can't seem to figure out who killed an inmate in JAIL. With all it's control points and surveillance an inmate is murdered and no one is held responsible. So lets put them in tents huh? Maybe in Tanner's backyard.
Everybody complains about lawyers dragging out cases, well how about Jeese Greer's case? How long will LE drag that case on?
All this talk about treating criminals tough? Does anyone know the percentage of inmates at the jail who have actually been convicted of something? Until then I believe they are innocent until proven guilty, or is that just another liberal ploy to destroy America.
Just like a story I read the other day of the guy who held up two post offices (Federal Crimes) and did not show up for his sentencing hearing ? Yes they caught him again but how the heck does that happen ? I guess he made bail....Ridiculous
