I was honored to receive a letter from Gene and Beth Grace claiming that I was among the 100 most influential people in Beaufort. I already knew that, but what I did not know was the lies they would peddle.
This letter is word-for-word from the Grace letter filled with lies.
The first lie in the letter is Senator Catherine Ceips has never passed any legislation.
How do you even come up with such a lie? Such a bold faced lie? Do these people have no shame?
Why not start with the Human Trafficking bill. I heard Senator Ceips talk about it to a local group and became very interested in the issue. What's sad is the Governor, when he was in Congress, WAS THE ONLY MEMBER OF CONGRESS TO VOTE AGAINST THE BILL.
Political public statements seldom state outright lies, but they may state half truths in a way that implies a lie.
Ceips hasn't introduced any bills solely in her name, but has cosponsored a list along with other legislators. They will cosponsor to drum up more support and utilize each other's staff that actually researches and writes a bill.
See: http://www.capwiz.com/beaufortgazette/webreturn/?url=http://www.scstatehouse.net%2Fmembers%2Fbios%2F0335227233.html
But what do you mean when you say Sanford, who was in the U.S Congress, voted against a bill that Ceips backed in the S.C. House? Not to mention that Sanford already was out of the Congress when Ceips was elected to the House.
"Why not start with the Human Trafficking bill. I heard Senator Ceips talk about it to a local group and became very interested in the issue. What's sad is the Governor, when he was in Congress, WAS THE ONLY MEMBER OF CONGRESS TO VOTE AGAINST THE BILL."
I guess I would have to explain basic government. Ok, I will try.
Mark Sanford was a Congressman (that would be in Washington, DC). There was a bill in Congress on Human Trafficking. Mark Sanford was the only member of Congress (in the House and Senate) to vote against the bill. Mark Sanford voted against outlawing human trafficking. He was the only Member of Congress to vote that way.
OK, is that clear?
Now a few years later he is Governor and Ceips introduced a bill in South Carolina (that would be Columbia, SC) to outlaw human trafficking.
Unless you know something about government that is not in any grade school civics book, Ex-Congressmen do not get to vote on state legislation.
The bill was about human trafficking. Catherine Cieps sponsored it and passed it. Sanford when he was in Congress voted against outlawing human trafficking.
I hope that helps you understand what was originally stated. The Governor, when he was in Congress, was the only member of Congress to vote against the bill. When he was in Congress being the operative clause there.
Are you suggesting that human trafficking was legal in South Carolina prior to Ms. Ceips introducing a bill in the Statehouse to outlaw the practice? And are you really suggesting that Governor Sanford was voting "in favor" of human trafficking when he cast his vote on the Congressional bill you reference? Your ignorance may be bliss to you, but it's just an eyelash short of unconscionable in my book.
"A bold-faced lie is a lie that is told when it is obvious to all concerned that it is a lie."
The original letter sent out by Tom Davis' Committee members, and repeated in the letter today, is a bold-faced lie. Senator Ceips has passed many bills with her name on it as both a co-sponsor and sponsor. I cited one example.
The real question is why would Tom Davis' Committee continue to tell such lies as originally started by Gene and Beth Grace?
Or maybe equally important why would this paper continue to print them?
The letter you speak of is just one more piece of dirty and unnecessary politics. I suppose we should expect this sirt of thing from poeple like this. Gene and Beth Grace work in a profession where it is all too common to inflict pain upon their patients while attempting to accomplish the goal at hand. Why would they think that any goal should be approached any differently. I think we just have to keep that in mind and disregard their efforts as mindless habitual behavior.
It amazes me that anyone would give any credence to anything spoken or written by the Grace/Rodgers/Keyserling/Gaither consortium. These people are important only in their own minds, and their powerbase is questionable at best. What do we have here? Two average dentists, a former legislator with a lackluster record, another former legislator who crosses party lines to stand with this group, and a failed school superintendent, all with delusions of grandeur! A small group of small minded people who believe they have the power and the right to manipulate and control electons in our community. It's time they understood that each of us has a voice equal to each of theirs, and that we are not stupid enough to perceive them as all knowing god-like figures.
I wish that Ceips and Davis and all candidates would get control of their campaign people and tell them NO MORE! We deserve better and we citizens want better! It's one thing to bring out differences in opinions, but the sleaze needs to stop. It is up to the candidates to enforce it. It not only lowers our respect for the candidates, but denigrates a democratic system that many soldiers died so that we could vote. Let's at least show some respect and dignify the system.
By allowing the disrespect for our system, it also breeds a disrespect between supporters. Every election seems to get worse.
We are a model for struggling nations wanting democracy. How can they respect our system when we allow such disrespect for each other?
Egret,
I couldn't agree more, this sort of behavior is reprehensible no matter which side it comes from. I doubt however that any candidate could rein in the group I mentioned. They are loose cannons who aren't necessarily directly supporting any candidate. They have a dislike for the Senator, and will back anyone who runs against her just to further their own purposes. I doubt that they are working for Davis, thye are just smearing the Senator. I think you'll find they have one or more anonymous voices here on the blog. I don't especialy like Rod shealy's tactics all the time either. But at least he is in the business professionally and does those things that are considered the norm in modern politics. And, he does it using his real name. Again, I don't like some of what he appears to do, but at least he is open aout it. Not like these other cowards. I will give the Graces credit for at least putting their names on this last one. That's a small improvement.
Below is the great accomplishments of OUR Senator Cieps: Where the Beef?

Looks like you just answered the question that you and localshrimp keep asking. Looks a a pretty busy couple of months to me and some good causes at that. Considering that most bills and resolutions languish in any House or Senate these resolutions appear to be moving normally. At least your post has given proof to the fact that the Senator is doing something in Columbia other than the socializing you have credited to her. Thanks again Edie!
Ceips has co-sponsored a lot of legislation. She has not had ONE thing passed that she was the main sponsor of. The reason being, she does not have the clout to pull in enough votes................even she knows this. That is why she, you and the rest of her kitchen ( ha, ha) cabinet are so defensive.
And no need to act like you aren't in the know re: her campaign. It is a well-known fact that you are in the thick of it with your buddy Randy the yard boy Bates.
Herman,
I am not working with the Senator's campaign this year. I speak my own thoughts and nothing more. Furthermore, I don't especially care for Mr. Bates or his approach to politics. I do however care about the passion with which the Senator pursues her duties and the way she looks after her constituents. You might try to be honest enough to tell the good people here that Freshmen Senators have little voice and that they really can't hope to primarily sponsor anything until at least their second term. Senates are run on seniority, and the freshmen are left out in the cold for a while...do we want to start all over again with Davis, or give Senator Ceips a chance to grow? This premise is not restricted to just our senators or our senate, but all of them in all 50 states and in the US senate. Get real Herman, tell the truth!
Wait while I catch my breath! I'm laughing soooo hard. Since when do you "not care for Randy Bates"? You, his most vocal and vehement supporter on these very blogs. If I gave enough of a rat's behind, I would cut and paste your own posts here just to remind you!
I would say it's OLD news, however, the very slimy Bates is still our incumbent Senator's "Chief of Staff", speechwriter, and right hand man (ie, yard boy)............is he not?
birds of a feather and all that, scooter. Ceips would stand a better chance of winning IF she had chosen to surround herself with people of good character. not to mention her own questionable character at that.

doesn't ever really defend bates on here that i see, but I admit I don't always read through these kinds of threads. He's a Ceips supporter yes we know. So he's her yard boy. So these other people lied on a letter representing Davis, yes it sucks but we can't judge a canidate by their yard boy can we? We can however judge her on her comunication with her supporters so if you like her tell her to answer my darn email, you know who I am scooter...
