Conservation group does an about face in Ceips endorsement

State Sen. Catherine Ceips and the Conservation Voters of South Carolina make for odd bedfellows. The nonpartisan conservation group endorsed Ceips this week, about 12 months after it endorsed her opponent in the hard-fought special election that landed her in the Senate. Read the story here.

Comments

As a member of many, many, many conservation groups I'll be supporting Catherine.

As a Friend of Hunting Island I know firsthand how hard she has worked for us and the beach, even when Governor Sanford and Tom Davis did not support us.

Saving the beach for the loggerhead turtle is as important as saving the beach for the public.

Could the reporter have written a more slanted story about Senator Ceips' endorsement?

Don't expect "fair and balanced" reporting from the local "news" media when it comes to reporting anything favorable about Senator Catherine Ceips.

Looks like the local papers are afraid of supporting a strong female State legislator who is not one of Sanford's good ole boy hand picked "yes men".

I think there is more to this than meets the eye. The good new is that we won't have to endure more of Sanfraud in the Governor's Mansion after this term. The bads news that I read between the lines is the increase in Sanfraud's efforts recently to place as many of his good ol' boys in positions of influence and power. Why? I think that sometime around 2010 we are going to see Sanfraud beginning to hint at a bid for the Whitehouse in 2012, and these powerful good ol' boys will be in a good position to help launch that effort. Think about it, Sanfraud is offering little more than minimal lip service in support of McCain. I would think that astute journalists can see this possibility too, and what better headlines could they ask for: "Local Boy Runs For President!" Those headlines will sell papers so why not help the cause along. Our Senator is not amongst the good ol' boy club, so understandably she is not going to benefit from any of this. But as you said, she is strong, and she will continue to prevail.

Copperhead, is that what this is?

Funny they are light on news and have truck loads of fertilizer.

Isn't this story by the same guy that went and talked to a fat Hispanic lady and wrote a story about how she was having five babies?

The whole thing was a scam. See anything similar about that?

Posted by noseeum - Sun, 2008-05-18 13:06

Got to hand it to you - this is a great name. Justwhat is our spoiled rich kid governor going to do when he leaves office anyway. If he ever ran for any national office - the funny hting is he would be just like Gore and Edwards - he might win where they don't know him - but he'd lose his rear-end here - big time. The man has been a dismal failure and tremendous disappointment. In the end - Sanfraud says it all.

Posted by savethelowcountry - Sun, 2008-05-18 22:08

Yep, the guy who complains about the most insignificant little negative remark about Ceips doesn't seem to mind ridiculing and name-calling when it suits his agenda.

Posted by KTOGP32 - Tue, 2008-05-20 19:47

I wouldn't characterize unproven accusations of adultery to be insignificant. If you have noticed, I have been equally as vocal when folks have made similar accustations about Davis. That sort of comment about any candidate is reprehensible. As far as referring to the governor as Sanfraud, please take note of the fact that I did not coin the term and that it is used by numerous people on blogs all over the state. It works somewhat like "Tricky Dick" or Slick Willie"...public domain. I do happen to hold the opinion that the name fits, and if I use it I am doing so with no veil of anonymity. Furthermore, I wouldn't hesitate to tell the Gov exactly what I think of him and his politics face to face if given the opportunity. Understand too that any issues that I may have with the governor relate to his performance and misdeeds in his job. The job we elected him to do for us. He is after all a public figure and his professional life is open to scrutiny. Having to bear his professional cross comes with the job, and he knew it full well going in. What he does in his personal life is of no consequence to me, and it is none of my business...or yours! Nor is the personal life of any other candidate. Job performance or professional integrity, have at it...that's part of the drill. You might also stop and think about the fact that private citizens are not subject to such scrutiny and that they do have the right to pursue slander and libel charges. When you develop the courage to spew your vile and thoughtless statements and accusations face to face or under your real name, I will respect your right to do so. But as long as you continue your destructive actions while hiding in anonymity I will continue to consider you nothing more than a coward.

Posted by topgunscooter - Tue, 2008-05-20 23:15

What a crock! No, you absolutely have not been "equally as vocal" concerning Davis. And justifying disrespectful name-calling because others are doing it or because you didn't invent the term is pretty lame.

BTW, your courage/coward/anonymity shtick is wearing pretty thin. That mindset seems to characterize the same folks who always resort to insults & name-calling. No one here cares what you think of anonymity on the internet, and all your bluff, bluster & chest thumping is hilarious. You get thrashed regularly on this forum and there is no reason to think you would fare any better in person. If you don't have the intellect to argue a point sensibly, just turn off the computer or go back to playing your video games.

Taxpayers of South Carolina,

Has she put forth ANYTHING to close our landfills in this state and SOLD the energy that our trash produces. We need a statewide referendum to issue tax free bonds to purchase machines that turn our trash into energy that can be SOLD back through the UTILITY Co. These companies want rate increases when they could sell the energy our trash produces instead? www.startech.net
has machines being sold all over the world. Is South Carolina going to lead in something? This State needs to lead this Nation in SOMETHING? What?...Education? Uh oh? Transportation? Uh oh? Power Generation Uh oh...Pee Dee is getting the shaft with COAL! How about our LANDFILLS! Can we lead the state in solving our Landfill problems? www.startech.net
Come On CIEPS!....Get BUSY!

Who do you work for? Your posts sound like a sales pitch and you point seems awfully single minded. Firstly, I don't believe there is a landfill in Beaufort County or in the Senator's district. Also, the municipalities run their own disposal mechanisms and negotiate their own landfill deals. I've seen documentaries about the systems you are speaking of and they do appear to hold a great deal of promise. But, I think you are placing far too much weight on a single Senator in this case. I'm sure she has many issues already on her plate, and this one may not have a place there yet.

Topgun,
I have a good job for Tom Davis. I wasted my time yesterday attending a meeting he had with Beaufort Realtors to talk about his campaign. His only goal was to talk about what Senator Ceips hasn't done. He has only goals to raise real estate point of sale taxes and to change some of the realtors disclosure requirements. And more. Maybe he could add landfills to his campaign banner.

While I was not at that meeting, nor have I yet decided as to whom I will cast my ballot, I would imagine, from other polictal meetings I have attended that Tom Davis tailored his agenda and his goals to address the issues that the Realtors would be interested in. If he were speaking at a Veterans Club or Sun City he would probably tailor his agenda to address the concerns of those audiences.

Yes

In all fairness I would have to agree with you. That is the norm for most political candidates.

Posted by topgunscooter - Wed, 2008-05-21 13:00

It wasn't tailoring the speech. It was how much time was spent on what he had to say about his goals. And how much time was spent on smashing Senator Ceips. He said that was the only way he could win.

Posted by thirtyyrsnbft - Wed, 2008-05-21 16:33

What next? Did Ceips solve the mystery of who shot JFK? What has she done about the Loch Ness monster?

The county and the city deals with trash. Why not call them?

Posted by Pennywise - Wed, 2008-05-21 07:49

She let this 500 million contract go through without having vision to use a nearby landfill as leverage. What is a politician for? SC Senator CATHERINE CIEPS needs to get a backbone. Are you going to let another utility in this state ask for a rate increase without seeing a grid tie-in plan for OUR landfills? What about a 1 for 1 energy credit for energy that is produce by citizens of this state and delivered BACK to the Utility? DO you really want to represent South Carolinians? These are public utilities...they work for US ALL! If their own workers new how the board and CEOs are turning a deaf EAR.....hmm...I could see a BROWN OUT in protest! If they are plannning for TIE in to the grid.....it is not being reported! Do we have LEADERS in this STATE!?

Posted by zoomer - Wed, 2008-05-21 09:03

Pennywise,

I know this is boring, but type in "JOSEPH LONGO" into google and read the article. Then got to www.startech.net . I know you take out the trash? It is money that can be used for numerous things. But most of all, we can close our landfills...forever. Look at how many countries are buying these machines in the press releases. Is your land cheap in Beaufort? SC Senator CIEPS must think so....she has received numerous emails from me without one reply. One. I don't expect a reply every time....but 1 in 30? 50? US Senator Buddy Witherspoon called after the first ONE!! Is she going to go home on June 5th? I think she needs to work overtime to get a bond referendum on the BALLOT in NOVEMBER! If she does that...I'll campaign for her and anyone else that works to close OUR landfills.... for governor in 2010! CAN SHE LEAD ??

Posted by zoomer - Wed, 2008-05-21 09:16

The machines are bought in volume to negotiate better price. Its going to take a LEADER who works across all counties to get this DONE. Plus ...these public utilities need to know who's boss...the taxpayers. DHEC will have to be hogtied. Public utility legislation will have to be reworked. These utilities WILL.....WILL receive excess energy at a 1 for 1 credit from taxpayers who produce more energy than they use to boot. Does any of our City, County, or State officials IMPLEMENT a solution? Ask yourself? What one thing STATEWIDE has been done? Mass transportation? Landfill Closure? School Choice and Vouchers, "Visiting" Immigrants?, ...WHAT?

Pick the easiest one FIRST....LANDFILLS!

Posted by zoomer - Wed, 2008-05-21 09:28

Most people only read ONE newspaper. Well...to really find out what is happening in OUR state, one needs to read just about all of the papers in the state. And then still take an educated..."GUESS"? No wonder our state doesn't lead in anything? Or get very little done. No one seems to communicate to solve a problem. They will talk about poker ..but then table it. They will kick up some dust on visiting immigrant paperwork but no business is shutdown and no owners fined and jailed. We have politicians taking contributions from waste haulers in Horry County. Did Cieps ring a cowbell? Laurens co. is increasing its landfill by 140 acres...did she go up there with Gov Sanford and give her view? We here in Charleston are fighting to close our landfill and turn it into a cash positive process. Has she voice her concerns in front of County COuncil here to be VISIBLE?

Who is going to be a LEADER!!!

Posted by zoomer - Wed, 2008-05-21 09:41

Topgunscooter.....

Thanks for taking time to read my post. I appreciate it. I work for no one politically. I am an engineer. I see your concern about Mrs. CIEPS being one Senator. But believe me, I have been emailing every SC Senator, SC REP, almost every County Council in the state, US Senators, Numerous Mayors, almost every editor in the state, and some radio and tv personalities about our state's 18 landfills. Ask Mrs. CIEPS how many emails she has received in the last month? If she notices..they were sent to everyone I could think of. This newspaper was on copy too. This change over to get money from landfills flowing the oppisite way will be no easy task. Counties own the landfills (or most of them), DHEC issues the permits, and Public utilities control the utility grids. In actuality most taxpayers are getting creamed two or three times. One being trash pick-up, which won't change either way. Second, is the tipping fees charged by the counties or landfill operators. Are they going to still charge by ton or pay by ton? Third, is the fact that county owned landfills usually don't pay for themselves and run a deficit (Chasn Co is 4 million). So Peter in a sense is getting robbed. ABOVE all, the utilities have the GALL to come to the citizens for a rate increase when we have energy sitting in our LANDFILLS....untapped. Is your BLOOD boiling now! Hopefully it is getting a little warmer? I'm sure Mrs. CIEPS tries HARD! But at some point...WONDERWOMAN has to whip out the golden LASSO..even if the media makes her out to be a nut! A simple one page outline on a SC GOV website that is marketed statewide on highly visible biilboards and rounds on the morning talk shows statewide would do wonders for her! This is a no brainer ..ONCE the message is delivered with marketing "ZING"!

Posted by zoomer - Wed, 2008-05-21 15:05

I didn't think you worked for anyone politically. You pitch seemed more like it came from someone in the landfill/recucling/alternative energy business. Your statement below seems to support that idea:
"This is a no brainer ..ONCE the message is delivered with marketing "ZING"!"

I don't disagree with the concept that you are touting, but why single out a hardworking Senator who is up for re-election? Especially when her opponent is and has been associated with so many corrupt activities. Seems to me that you are trying to sway an election for your own benefit. What about the people? If you want to sell this idea, why not be a bit more subtle and work through the system instead of trying to manipulate it? Good ideas take time to develop!

Posted by topgunscooter - Wed, 2008-05-21 16:02

Following up on my previous comment and explaination...
This technology has been in the works for years..BUT ...all partie involved in the landfill closure do not want to face up to the truth with voters. Once debate starts rolling in the statehouse on WHO is going to control the revenue...OH BOY? Will it still be Counties, the state, utilities, or private Contractors? If it turns out to be Private Contractors, the light will be shined on just how CORRUPT the trash business is and how the taxpayers have been taken to the woodshed for years. WOW!! City and Counties with egg on their face, the state legislatures for lack of leadership, and utility companies for ignoring the public trust and asking for the rate increases! Its going to be fun.... the only one that will come out smelling like a rose is the one politician or county council who leads the closure of the first landfill? The question now is .....who wants to make history? This is a DAM waiting to break! And if done right with tax free muni BONDS, it will be done with NO TAX INCREASE! Ha!

Posted by zoomer - Wed, 2008-05-21 15:40

Buddy Witherspoon has listened...he pursues solutions. Its a shame that out of all State officials informed of this solution, he and SC Sen Patrick Haddon are the ones who wanted to know more??
Democrats...are you not the defenders of the Environment? I'm just a South Carolinian who wants to close landfills and possibly help counties balance their budgets. I own no stock and am paid by no one...period. I just see a solution.
In addition...SC Senator CIEPS and taxpayers, take a look at this website:
http://www.valcent.net/s/Ecotech.asp?ReportID=182039 it is a company that has a unique process for producing biofuel. Why can't we get some farmers here in this state on this bandwagon? We have no OIL wells here..I wonder how many politicians in this state take donations form oil companies? Real South Carolinians don't BEND OVER

Posted by zoomer - Wed, 2008-05-21 15:55

The bottom line on biofuels is that some entrepreneurs have to invest in a plant to make it usable. There would be buyers if the product were available at a competitive price. Having an idea is fine, but getting a product like this from the drawing board, getting the permits from the state and federal bureaucracies, getting into production and then marketing and distribution is the hard part. Like saying we need to build a rocket to get to Mars. Technically a nice idea, but the hard part is still ahead of us.

The legislators can't make businesses take on projects. They can provide enabling legislation and incentives, but if the concept lacks a good business plan, no one will step up. So far, it may be an option for the future, especially if the price of fuel continues to climb.

Bottom line, don't blame Ceips or any other legislator. It may not be the right time yet.

Posted by egret57 - Wed, 2008-05-21 16:24

Egret57...

Thanks for the reply....No I don't just blame CIEPS...I blame everyone..ME included. Yes ..ME! That's why I'm on comment sections all over the state gigging our elected officials to LEAD!! When a new business comes to town, who is there to cut the ribbon? All South Carolinians want to see is consistent reporting on how politicians are moving our state forward and not bickering. When there is an obvious solution to problems we face as a state, OUR state Officials must lead the HORSE to water and MAKE HIM DRINK with tax free muni bonds or incentives or ARM twisting!! If not...we will be bending over to everyone ELSE! Right?
If we have any farms in this state..still on subsidies, shouldn't we be looking into new CROPS?? I just hope this company makes a rooftop version so I can make my own biofuel!! I may still need oil...but far less. We as a state need to think out of the box and we need leaders we can HEAR. It takes nerve to run for office; but once your there ...don't be silenced or lost in a paper tornado! Be visible...and protect all South Carolinians; no matter how frenzied the media makes you out to be. Show up at the radio stations and demand to be heard...if not go to another one. If they still refuse, take a picture and post it on your website!! For PROOF! Wear a T -shirt that says "No More LANDFILLS..Ask me HOW?" instead of a pantsuit, skirt, or dress.
Get a car wrap with your picture that says "CIEPS and Biofuel for Gov in 2010"!! Do you get my point?

Posted by zoomer - Wed, 2008-05-21 16:43

In all fairness, if Sen. Ceips had a record of accomplishment, Tom Davis would not be making reference to all that she has NOT done. However, the sad fact is that she has left herself wide open to such rhetoric through her own dismal record of nothingness.
Wake up folks, this is an election! A challenger would be ridiculously naive if he or she did NOT point out their opponent's shortcomings.
If Ceips can't take the heat, perhaps it is time for her to get out of the kitchen.

Get a life Dude! You messed up the school system, it wasn't the Senator! She has accomplished much, but couldn't save you from forced retirement...sorry for your bad luck and poor judgement! She has done well despite what you might say. Keep it up, and I will start posting all of the misdeeds and criminal activity that I have found on the part of the Gov and his lackey. Go ahead, challenge me, and I will destroy your candidate's chances. I'm trying to be nice here, but it won't continue for long unless you qnd your cronies back off of your attacks. And, I'll bet that _UCB is holding back on more of this info than I am. Bring it!!!

Just to make a point...

SC Senator Glenn McConnell is just a culpable. He bought a civil war cannon; but did he FIRE any shots? Did he close down ANY landfills? NO!! Why has it taken me so long to be this vocal? My head was in the sand! We all as South Carolinians bear some blame! This problem is solvable. This issue could be on this november's ballot if bonds were needed? Is anyone going to lead? Mark Sanford's office did call once...by the way!! But if every county rep and state rep doesn't work together...nothing gets done. We are ONE state!

Posted by zoomer - Wed, 2008-05-21 18:03

Are you going to answer my question, keep avoiding it, or what? Who do you work for, and why are you singling out one and only one candidate? And, pray tell why do we need your vision of waste management....how much are you making off the deal if you can sell it?

Posted by topgunscooter - Wed, 2008-05-21 20:07

Topgunscooter....

Oops....My bad ....I said everything except the one nugget you needed. I'm learning here too! I work for Spawar Systems Center in Charleston SC. I've been a civil servant for over 19 years and have been in the forefront of a lot of new technology and how it can benefit both Federal, state, and County problems. I work for no one campaign and I think I prefer it that way. I'm considering a run in 2010 for governor as a South Carolinian! That way I can wack or praise either Democrats or Republicans to get this State to move on at least ONE statewide issue! V/R Philip C. Branton 843-813-4080

There are a number of waste management solutions. I OWN NO STOCK IN ANY COMPANIES, ...that would be UNETHICAL! Nor does my family. That's how I get people to listen. Look at who they are selling these machine too at www.startech.net alone. Don't you want to see the next STARBUCKS before the rest of the NATION catches on to the solution to there trash problem? Charleston Co. alone runs a 4 Million Deficit in waste alone that they rob other pots from! When voters find out ....Just say Gov Philip Branton !!
