South Carolina may join five other states that let motorcyclists, mo-ped drivers and bicyclists run red lights that don't change within a couple minutes of their stopping. Read the story here.

This would be good for beaufort county mabe us cars can take advantage of this bill with the 2 minut rule, lots of thoses lights in the city of beaufort and bluffton and hilton head.
Sure, let's make it more dangerous for bikers! I think if they're going to let this sensless law pass then they atleast need to make a mandatory helmet law to go with it. And name me one intersection in Beaufort where you could safely pull this off at. There aren't any!
This law actually doesn't affect safety to any great extent. The situation in question only occurs in light traffic. A bike does not have enough metal mass to trigger the magnetic sensors. If the bike is alone at the intersection the light won't change...not at all! But, if there is even one car at the intersection that has passed over the sensor the light will change. Generally if traffic is that slow in one direction it will also be light in the other direction. When a bike is stuck at a light like that and the law allows the maneuver, it is performed the same way as you would respond to a static stop sign. You wait the allotted time, and then look both ways and only enter the intersection when traffic is clear. It's perfectly safe as long as it is done as the law dictates.
And, please, don't get baldy and I started on helmet laws! It's a adult choice, and helmets aren't as safe as you might think! Just peel back the liner of any helmet and read the disclaimer that states the helmet provides no protection at speeds above 15 mph. Then wait until you have to helpessly watch your friend bleed to death because the helmet strap cut his jugular vein. I did, and we were 17 at the time!
