Sanford jabs Ceips for abstention, office denies campaign shenanigans

In a press release Wednesday, Gov. Mark Sanford criticized state Sen. Catherine Ceips for abstaining from a "key vote" Tuesday for restructuring state government, called on her constituents to pipe up in favor of the effort and threw in a jab referencing her early departure from a Lady's Island campaign event. Read the story here.

Things must be going so well for the governor he has time to sit around and waste our money issuing bogus press releases for his good ole buddy Davis.

If the governordeveloper is gonna be issuing press releases on everyone that doesn't vote his way he's gonna be a busy, busy boy.

Sad.

Pathetic.

Maybe if the governordeveloper didnt try to govern by press release he might actually get something done.

I'm so tired of these men picking on women.

Didn't Governor Sanford and Tom Davis hire an aide that beat up a woman? Isn't this the same guy that said he would attack Catherine's morals?

Who's afraid of Catherine Ceips?

Looks like a lot of little boy politicians in Columbia and Beaufort.

Wealthy woman - Senator Ceips ruins another's mariage! This is way wrong for our Senator.

Now Scarborough's bizarre behavior on the night of July 15 has led to an investigation into other aspects of his life, the report of which appears in this issue of City Paper. Affidavits filed by Scarborough's estranged wife in divorce proceedings at Charleston County Courthouse show the District 115 representative to be having a long-term affair with Rep. Catherine C. Ceips of Beaufort.

This sounds like a bad made-for-television movie, but it gets worse. Scarborough and Ceips both supported the proposed "defense of marriage" amendment to the state constitution.

Don't you have anything new, your source is just another tabloid website, and this ploy has been tried before. It obviously does not work. Get some imagination and maybe an original thought, then come back here and astound us with your brilliance.

You're pretty sensitive about old news articles. Why is that?

Posted by KTOGP32 - Thu, 2008-05-15 12:57

You said it yourself, it's old news, and it obviously hasn't been an effective mud bomb before. Why would it work now, just because YOU said it? Find something original, you're getting boring. It's bad enough to have to read your ignorant rants, it's worse yet to watch you continually repeat the same old drivel. It was all aired out on this blog long before you came here.

You've made it painfully obvious there are many concepts that you fail to understand.

BTW, Mr. Spellcheck, if you had bothered to get that G.E.D. you would know the word you were looking for is "cowardice."

Do you think ol' scooter knows that "referring" contains three "r's?" I believe scooter is familiar with all sorts of "lyin," "ess" and otherwise.

Well,.... anyway you look at it. CEIPS is looking helter skelter! SHe is being taken to the woodshed by the media! Irregardless of Sanford's or whoever's comments!! She needs to get a voice!!

Posted by zoomer - Thu, 2008-05-15 08:54

Is this what we elected this guy for? Doesn't he have real things to work on and how much is this costing me for him to campaign from the Governor's office?

Posted by noseeum - Thu, 2008-05-15 08:58

If you read the actual account of the vote, no roll was taken so it isn't known if she voted yay, nay, or did not vote. What is known is that she did not formally abstain. From all appearances many Senators did not vote this round so as to further examine the bill before the next vote. This is a sleazy campaign tactic by Sanfraud and nothing more.

Let's get right down to what is really going on here in Beaufort County.

We have Sanford's hand picked "hit man" running against Ceips because they don't like her.
Heck, these two rascals don't like most of the members of the Senate or House.

This is what Tom Davis and Sanford have done to earn the total anomosity of the General Assembly? They brought in the ex-governor of Florida, Jeb Bush, to run around South Carolina to raise money for their PACS.

The sole purpose of these (PACS) "political action committees" is to defame and attack legislators these two "good ole boys" don't like or agree with.

Now we all know why the Governor and his ex-chief of staff are disliked big time, in our state house and nothing gets done.

Davis and Sanford have alienated the most powerful members of the General Assembly and Beaufort County suffers because of their devisive agenda.

It's obvious neither one of them learned how to win friends and influence people". They are grand standers with a mean streak a mile wide.

Tom Davis should withdraw from his negative Senate campaign.
Go back to your law practice.
That courageous action would be in the very best interests of our county.

CEIPS is the QUEEN of negative campaign......get your statements straight! Who started the negative attacks before the race even began. CEIPS. OH, yes it was those two guys who work for Ceips-Shealey & Bates who did it. Not poor Catherine Ceips-a women with high morals would never do that. The residencse of Beaufort County are not the stupid!

Then all of a sudden, someone starts talking about her voting record-real issues to talk about finally and it's negative 'good ole boy' attacks against a women. Give me a break. She's wearing the shoes so she needs to fill them, OH excuse me, she is abstaining from filling the shoes at the moment!

Sentor Ceips Abstains from voting......and you think this is OK ????

I am not a fan of Gov. Sanford nor do I know Tom Davis, but abstaining from voting is doing nothing! Get you act together, do your homework, and lead the charge for or against this bill. The bill passed the House of Rep. unanimously, so it can't be all bad or wrong.

This is not poltics I am talking about. I am talking about our STATE SENTOR CEIPS going to Columbia and abstaining to vote. Bottomline: doing nothing (chicken). Why did she even show up then???

We need someone to stand up for Beaufort County and our Senator CEIPS is abstaining! Give me a break..........no spin on this one can work.... State SENATOR Cathrine-i am abstaining to vote- CEIPS should not be re-elected.

Abstaining is a cowards way out !!!

Posted by local29902 - Thu, 2008-05-15 11:02

I don't normally comment on Ceips threads because, honestly, I don't care for her. That being said, I feel this was a low blow by Sanford. C'mon, when was the last time or ever, that you have seen a Gov. issue a press release concerning how a Sen. voted or didn't vote? Did he issue a PR for the other Sentors that didn't vote? Sanford seems to keep forgetting that he is the Gov. of the entire state of SC... Not just Beaufort County. He butts his nose into too many of our local affairs.

BTW: Several of the BCSB members, when they bother to show up, abstain from voting.

Posted by born_in_beaufort - Thu, 2008-05-15 11:43

She left the debate after 15 minutes to go to Columbia and abstain on a vote? She is a clever one that Ms.Ceips and her bosses, the now un-oficial Bates and Shealey. She would have been totally humiliated again, if she had stayed to actually debate Davis. Smart of her to run off and with an almost real excuse to (not) vote in Columbia.

Shealey comes out with a press release? Who really cares what he says. Ceips is, as usual, hiding behind her campaing managers / handlers.

Posted by dratsagain - Thu, 2008-05-15 11:47

...Ceips is smart. Personally, I wouldn't waste any time with Davis either.

BTW, Davis quit his job. He quit being Chief of Staff for the Governor. He quit. The fact is that he could no longer spin all the plates for Sanford.

Even, the "spindoctor" couldn't spin anymore, amazing...he quit.

It would really be a mistake if the voters allow the "dynamic duo" of Sanford and Davis to gain control of Beaufort County. It would be a big mistake.

The bigger mistake would be to keep CIEPS in office. She goes to Columbia and does nothing. ABSTAINS .....hahahhahaha what a joke! Then, Ceips gets called out on it and all everyone wants to do is spin it away from her, to explain it away. No.....not this time! BUSTED !!! Ceips is Bad News for Beaufort County.

You consider it inaccurate when it's not your way........or your spin.

We deserve better here in Beaufort County & Ceips is not getting it done by abstaining to vote. A bill that past the House of Rep-100% in favor!

Please list the news worthy accomplishments of her performace in public office? I have asked for this several times and still get a 'abstaining' response.

Oh yes, only two. How manys years has she been in public office? What a accomplishment she has made.....two. One was a 'meeting for the bridge being down' & One was for the '$60,000 towards educations'.

Got anymore? Why do I feel like I am having to pull this out of you? Again, Ceips accomplishments are weak at best.

She went to Columbia to do the job we elected her to do, and once there after conferring with colleagues she did that job in accordance with what was thought to be in the best interest of the constituents. According to the Senate, she did not formally abstain. What did apparently occur was that after the session opened several Senators felt that the bill was not yet clear enough to be voted upon. As a group they did not vote so that the bill could be further reviewed and clarified prior to a final vote. That seems to me to be an act that was carried out to protect the citizens of SC and Beaufort County, and make sure the bill was appropriate before enacting it. There are several accounts of what truly occurred on the internet.

Facts straight?

She didn't support nor vote for a bill that was voted by the HOUSE OF REP.-100% in favor. True or False?

Get your facts straight! While Ceips was our Rep here in Beaufort & now State Senator, what has she accomplished???? Now she abstained from voting. How clear can it be? She just confirmed she is doing NOTHING.

Straight enought for your? No spin you can put on it will change the FACTS !

What the Seantor did was part of a concerted effort by several Senators, not some renagade act as you are claiming. It was done for good reason and to protect the citizenry. No spin, just a more complete version of the story than you want to have told. Having a battle of wits with you is like dealing with an unarmed two year old!

Why must you result to insults and name calling?

How about we stick to the issues??? Did Ceips vote for or did she vote against the bill that was past by the House of Rep. - 100% in favor?

She didn't vote, she abstained. True or false?

Let's stick to the facts......no name calling now.

Maybe let's look at her entire voting record.......uhmmmmm, Guess how many time she was 'absence' or 'abstained' in the past? Come on, guess?

Didn't "WE" as registered voters vote Catherine Ceips as our state Senator? So does this mean that "WE" as voters made the wrong call? Not us voters! "WE" know exactly what we want. Therefore "WE" made the correct choice. So I say "WE" need to uphold our choice and support her in everyway possible. This name calling BS is for school kids. I as a registered voter am an adult. I stand behind my choice. I support my choice. Ceips personal life is that of her own. I do not know if she is a homewrecker because I was not part of it nor am I a part of her life in that sense. I as a registered voter put her there because she IS the person for the job.

Ceips name appears in a divorce case because Scarborough's wife is making several allegations to win a settlement of divorce and compensation. Her lawyers are doing what lawyers do, make a wish list of allegations then force the defense lawyers to refute it in court. It's the "prove we're not right" tact. They make the defense lawyers and their client have to prove that those allegations have no substance.

In a civil court. there are few limitations and there are thousands of suits every year. Some have merit and some don't. Like the lady that sued McDonald's for having hot coffee.

Everyone should consider that these are just allegations. The lady has a bone to pick and may be biased. We don't have any proof and when the case goes to court, we'll see what the judgment is.

Meanwhile, in this nation, we all have the right to be innocent until proven guilty. In this case, even if she were involved, there are no civil laws preventing consenting adults from seeing each other.

At least find some credible information to criticize her.

I see everyone wanted to talk about old news stories, what they think the Senator did or did not accomplish, and who shot JR.

The simple question is did we elect this clown sanfraud to use the governor's office to run campaigns for his drunken frat buddy?

Or if you don't like that one, the story said if you happened to have read it that Senator Ceips did not abstain from the vote. So where does the governordeveloper come off saying she did?

Posted by Pennywise - Thu, 2008-05-15 22:47

She has done the same thing having someone knock on Tom Davis' door to investigate a painter. Have the Gazette run it on the front page, and then to boot...send thousands of letters, either paid by her office or campaign, challenging Davis to a lie-detector test.

They are both doing what politicians do, so don't act like Ceips is running a squeaky-clean campaign. She started it as far as I'm concerned.

Any attempt to replenish the beach at Hunting Island is a waste of money, from the general fund. However I do believe that if HI was allowed to keep the Park use fees it collects then that money could be spent in whatever manner a Board would permit. Continued dredge and dump operations at HI make as much sense as a screen door on a submarine. Altering the course of the longshore drift may be outside the scope of man, much less the brain trust of our legislature. Sen Ceips' time would be better spent trying to spend millions recovering obscure Revolutionary War flags or putting a damper on the GeoCachers of the Palmetto State.

Congratulations to the State of South Carolina for wiping out the beach on the South end of Hunting Island. Great Job! Way to go!
