Clean the air in Beaufort; restrict smoking in city

After a long year of waiting for the Supreme Court to favorably rule that local governments can impose smoking bans in public places, it's time for the city of Beaufort to clear Read the story here.

I happen to be a smoker and can completely understand about not smoking in restraunts, but not at parades and any other outdoor event?? That is absolutley the mose ridiculous thing I've ever heard. You dont see people going around wanting to band alcohol now do you? Even public drinking for that matter, such as people being allowed to drink downtown at the waterfront as they wander from bar to bar AND its not even that, its the fact that the ground is cluttered with plastic cups and trash, what about keeping the ground clean??? I mean what gives one person the right to not be allowed to smoke at an event, when the person next to you is drinking something and decides to not use a trash can. I just dont see what the point is and I think the county is going to have a hard time with this one.

I know bar patrons carry their drinks from bar to bar on the waterfront, however it is illegal and you can be ticketed for it. I have a friend that was at a local drinking establishment a couple of summers ago. This place has a small porch facing the bay. My friend stepped off the porch onto the sidewalk with a drink in his hand. He was answering his cell phone and he left the porch to have a private conversation. He was not going anywhere else, merely standing on the sidewalk behind the establishment with his drink in his hand. Lo, and behold,he was ticketed for having alcoholic beverage in public.

I wasn't trying to say it was legal to drink outside, I'm simply trying to make a point. Downtown there are at least 50-60 people walking around outside carrying their drinks and never have I seen anyone have anything said to them. Also during the water festival for the Street Dance drinking it allowed OUTSIDE and every year the street is cluttered with trash.

Yes, I know the point you were making, and I addressed it in my first sentence. The reason drinking is allowed in the park and on Bay Street during Water Festival is because it is considered a private affair. The Water Festival rents the waterfront park exclusively for the duration of the event. They obtain permits from the state to serve alcohol at these events, therefore it is allowed. They always have people at the entrance points to the events to stopping people from bringing alcohol into the event and taking alcohol out of the event. The trash on the streets after the Street Dance is cleaned up and the street is hosed down after the event before the street is opened back up to the public.

That's what was most recently estimated to be the national savings if we trimmed up our waistlines in this country. I say, if you are going to jump on the bandwagon of banning smoking, ban trans-fats in all of Beaufort County. Enforce school extra curricular sports for all enrolled students and require all citizens in the county to follow a stringent fitness regiment. Why not? If you’re going to cite possible savings, let’s make sure we utilize all of the possible savings available. Furthermore your proposed ban should include the entire state of South Carolina or it will only promote smokers and their business going to areas that allow smoking, i.e. Port Royal.

We shall do it all, in lockstep as instructed.

6am wake up
6.05am - pee
6.10am = dump
6.22am - chickory coffee - caffeine is dangerous and coffee is obtained from underpaid peasants who are lackeys of the big coffee machine.
6.30am - walk or run 2 miles, 50 sit ups, 50 pushups - no girly ones allowed
7.00am - breakast: 1 banana, 1/2 grapefruit, 1/4 cup whole grain unsweetened cereal with macrobiotic yogurt [1tbl over top]
7.16am - shower. Water on, water off, lather with natural soap, water back on to rinse, dry with hemp towel, cotton requires too much processing - cold water only to save 3 barrels of oil and 1800 tonnes of CO2 every year.
7.30am - get bicycle and bike to work, or, if you have not moved closer yet, to the solar powered commuter train station. Sun not up yet, so you have to wait for the train to start.
8.15a - get to work, refill reuseable water bottle with tap water reclaimed from the sewage treatment plant. Empty out water you got yesterday which has turned cloudy.
8.30a - start work, the lights are off in the office except from 10.15-10.30a and 3.15-3.30p. Saves energy. The brightness on your computer monitor turned all the way down to save 3 watts a day.
8.30-12N - work.
12n-12.45p - lunch, consisting of a 15 min exercise period and then a nice spinach salad without dressing. No toppings except for onion, tomato or peppers allowed. Heart Healthy meals ordered by National Organization of Friendly And True Caring Heart Indicator Chapter Kings, [NO FATCHICKS - one for you scooter and baldeagle].
12.45-1pm - former smoking time now used for non-smoking classes, propaganda on environmental issues and understanding how we call can help our local politicians save the environment.
1-5.30pm work.
5.30-6pm - cocktail hour. Various vegetable and fruit smoothies designed to pick up your body at the end of the day.
6p-7p - mandatory exercise. Everyone exercises.
7p-8pm - dinner - various menus provided and you may select a heart healthy or cancer cleansing option from the menus, including various shapes of tofu, fruit and legumes, vegetable toss, and, once every other day, a 4oz selection of free range chicken or beef slaughtered humanely with respect to the great animal Gods of mother Earth. If it is your birthday, you are permitted one serving, 2"x3", of low fat, flourless cake made with products derived from seaweed, including generous doses of heart healthy Omega 3.
8p-10p - play with kids, talk with wife, attend community meetings on 'giving back to those less fortunate, or on starting a neighborhood recycling program.' Television, other than PBS and C=Span 1 through 9 have been banned.

Does that sound about right the anti-smoking, anti-eating and anti-everything else nazis?

Oh, you mean you don't mean that? Then what do you mean? Something 'less' restrictive? Well then, who gets to decide how much 'less' restrictive it is? So you want 'some' freedom of thought and expression? Who sets that boundary as well?

Once we get to national health care, only the poorest and most favored minorities will be able to be fat and receive health care, to 'make up' for a hundred years of poor nuitrition. The rest of us will be 'required' to be within a range of weight in order to receive health care for ANY disease that could be linked to weight. The other restrictions will start to come in - the liberals in this nation have made it clear that is their agenda. e.g., if you come in a carpool or on public transport, your wait will be shorter.

Just be careful what you wish for. . .

But, you might get busted for having that hemp towel.

After your post, I will not vote for you for mayor. Not even for Frogmore where I live. Sorry. LOL

A paltry 1.5 hours of exercise a day! Why bother. C'mon, you're a pilot and you know the benefits of exercise. 2 hours a day minimum. Now that my orthopedic surgeon has uncrippled my old butt, I figure I'm about 3 weeks out from resuming my routine. It will sure feel good to drop some LB's and get on the road again. C'mon I know you either run or bike to maintain your flight fitness so quit joking about folks getting in shape. This entire nation could use some mandatory exercise. One of the few good things I can say about W is that he's a good runner and cyclist. I don't know if Clinton could do either, but then he didn't seem to have a problem scoring with the young chicks.

Ok, Ad - you are now my Fitness Czar - will you join my administration?

If all of you support my candidacy of change - support me and thats all you'll have left in your pockets - change - I am ready to hit the ground running with full complement of cabinet and other posts filled. Ready go on Day One.

Many smokers are very courteous, and being a smoker does not make someone a bum. You one the other hand behave like a jerk! What a lowcrawling comment! Do you always throw a tantrum to get your way? Why don't we at least be democratic and put this issue to a vote of the people. This is not a totalitarian society even though you seem to think it should be. You might be surprised by the results.

I agree with you TGS. If the City Council insists on sticking their noses into private busines affairs by proposing a smoking ban, at least be democratic about it and bring to a vote by the public. Let the citizens decide.

Sarcastically, yes that’s what I meant Joe. I can’t see the benefit of a smoking ban that is not proposed by the Federal Government and approved by the voters. These hodgepodges of municipalities that have set up bans in some areas and not in others has proven to lead to some businesses benefiting and others either failing or overhauling their establishments to adhere to the new clientèle based upon county lines and jurisdictions. Does that make sense? What makes people think that the employees of Port Royal where no ban is proposed, or, for the thousands of other counties where no ban is proposed are not in need of the same protections as the employees of banned areas are. The proponents of banning seem to willingly ignore the vast majority to fit the ideals of a few. And since my point was missed about trans-fats and possible savings, I’ll try restating it. If anyone is going to throw figures out there stating the savings of eliminating smoking, then lets not stop there. New York, California and entire nations have banned trans-fats for the “protection” of their people. Shouldn’t the same person using the excuse of “protection” also feel the need to protect the population from obesity and obesity causing trans-fats? What about emissions standards for vehicles? Talk about protecting ourselves and future generations… The argument of “needing” to protect holds no water when you limit the protection you are willing to stand for to only your personal gain. By the way, I appreciated the effort put in by your returning sarcasm. Hilarity ensues.
