Visitors to Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park might soon be able to surf the Internet for free. They also may be able to watch themselves -- on the Internet -- surfing the Internet in the park. Read the story here.

i can understand wanting the camera to TRY and keep crime down but its kinda creepy being "watched"...
Aw, c'mon, there are cameras EVERYWHERE - when you go to popular places I make a point of seeing if there is a camera nearby, then I'll call my friends and relatives and waive at them.
It'll kinda weird to actually be waiving at myself . . .
One thing - don't use copper cables -
Security cameras are literally everywhere you go now. You go to any shopping center or mall you are being watched, both in the parking lot and in the stores. I think the addition of cameras in the Waterfront Park is a good idea. If you are not doing anything illegal or inapropriate then you should not feel uncomfortable being watched. People are watching you all the time. I don't see much difference in being watched by others in the park and being watched by a security camera.
are getting pretty crazy with the camera thing. I understand on the main street and even some by the marina, but I don't know about the rest of the waterfront. It's a little "big brotherish" to me. I could understand if it was just for security reasons, but not if it's for anyone to log on and watch.
Look, having cops around is great, but if you put camera there it's going to discourage people from going at all. Look at hemingways... I know a bunch of people that quit going because of the camera feed to the internet.

that's not that bad... I was waiting on tripple A one time and the dot was there in a flash cause I was in range of the camera. They offered to help me, and it made me feel better about being a woman who drives alone often. That's not a camera on an area that has has over 7 bars within a mile (and I am sure it's over 7) These are not cameras we need.
What is the corelation between the number of bars and security cameras in the park? Are you afraid that someone will be sitting in the park on their computer and see you bar hopping?? I think because there are 7 bars on the waterfront would justify placing the cameras in the park. Like I said before, If you are not doing anything wrong, you shouldn't have to worry about being seen.
I tend to agree with Zoo. I'm sure there are folks out there who might not wish to be seen drinking on the internet or anywhere else the cameras could be accessed from. More importantly though I think a park should be a romantic environment at night and the cameras would ruin that sort of atmosphere. Imagine walking out the back doors of one of the bars connected to the park to go cuddle with that special someone. Then bang, you're on candid camera! I find the idea of cameras in the park to be invasive and unnecessary. I could understand it if cash registers were present, but they aren't. George Orwell was probably right, he just had the time off by 24 years.
I know most of the owners so I bar hop pretty regularly :)
I am not worried about being caught doing anything wrong, I don't do anything wrong silly, I think it's stupid! It's not going to provide security to anyone if they are in the park getting hurt, it's just going to catch it on camera... Cops are down there on a regular basis, and they need to be... I have been in the park SEVERAL nights and had or witnessed altercations.
I just think if we are going to put in cameras we can be smart about it. Put them in areas in front of Emily's, Breakwater, the main bay street area maybe that front area by the flag pole, yes like middle school, that's still fighting grounds. Other than that, it's invaasive!
See Now we can Have "BlogFest" in the park, heres the plan, we all go to the park on a set date, power up our laptops and listen to our favorite online music, TV, sports or 911 Scanner (UCB) and we set up booths from the local schools to sell food, modems, flash drives and of course we can have competetions like a typing contest, thesaurus word match contest, pin the tail on the Editor contest and the BG could be our #1 sponsor and the prizes could be "Get out of Blog Jail free Cards" that way those of YOU who step over the line can use the card so you won't have to move to Bermuda to get a new email address. We could end the day with a band, not a real band, just a online podcast that we would watch on someones (Mayor Farrell) projection screen 8 foot monitor.
We could actually get away with this without paying for the use of the park, security or anything byy just organizing it online and it would really be just 200 people with laptops showing up on the same day by coincedence. hahaha
I like it, it might serve as a good precursor to banishment. I wonder how many points would have to be applied to one's blogger's license?
How pomo....
At first glance I thought you said porno. I was worried cuz I wasn't sure you were allowed to say that. I like what you've done on the site so far and I was afraid you might get banished from your job. Then I put my glasses on....what a relief!
