Do these legislaters even care about the enviornment or global warming!!!! because it sure does'nt seem like it.
Scientists continue to waver on whether we are having warming or cooling. Back in the "60s we were being warned about another possible ice age. The rage lately among some is warming. Now another group says cooling. Shall we wait and let them debate until the scientists can get together and agree? I'm not holding my breath.

Well either way it seems like somebody is playing frenzy with the developers.I mean for what other reason would they want to open thousands of acres of wetlands for developments. When there are already so many new developments in both Beaufort and Hilton head and other places along the coast.Actually some who live in Hilton head say that it has been completly takin over by development and I agree.I just wonder what would happen if they went for Fripp,Dataw or Daufuskie.Would the people on these islands let developers take over. And it seems like there is global warming. If you just look on the news and all the places that are flooding and look at the all the bad weather.Somebody needs to do something quick!! because Bush sure did'nt help this situation of Global warming.Although he could have if he wanted to.
Yeah. Back in 1998, friends of mine moved. Sure hated to see them go.
We had bad weather back when they were predicting another ice age in the late '50s and '60s. Hurricane Gracie hit here in 1959 and the '60s were a very cold and wet decade. The coldest temp I saw here was 9 degrees and there were several snows in the'60s, '70s and '80s. The point is that we will have bad weather irregardless of cooling or warming.
Bush gets blamed for a lot of things, but remember congress makes the laws. And if the scientists could reach a consensus, maybe the congress could act. We'll have to have patience while they collect their data to reach a conclusion. Of course, we may have to wait 10,000 years to collect enough data! LOL

Data!! lol I think it's pretty obvious what people need to to help the enviornment, which is to stop polluting it.Why do people seem to think that chemicals in the air like air fresheners and sprays make the air fresher.I'll tell you one thing.if you believe that know that, that is a lie.The air outside is usually cleaner than the air inside your house because there are trees that clean the air.All you have to do is open windows. So what happens when developers come and cut down all the trees. And why are there only a few smart car dealerships in the US.Europeans are driving electric cars, while Americans are have to use gas to get around & American's are now having to pay sky rocket prices for gas.At what point will people do something about. If Europeans can have more efficient cars I don't see why we can't except for the simple fact that there lobbyist. Also why do people let the natural beauty in their own towns and country crumble and then pay to go to another country for it's natural beauty, like Bahamas,Carribean's etc. Will things ever change. Will are new president whoever it might be even care about the enviornment. And now they want to make some kinda laws that could put natural resources in jeporady because developers want to develop more and ultimetly make more money off of us.This is unbelievable!!,just unbelievable I tell you.
Marissa,
I challenge you to pay a visit to one of the factories that make the batteries for those electric cars. Take some pollutant sensitive equipment with you and record the levels of toxins produced and released into the atmosphere from there. I think you will be surprised when you learn that one of those factories creates more pollution in a single day than all of the cars in the U.S. do in a month. You're buying into the hype! Learn the facts!

So you think that gas cars are better than electric and hybrid?
One battery facory creates more pollutants than EVERY CAR IN AMERICA makes in a month?
I dare you to produce stats on that top gun scooter.
That is as ridiculous as anything anyone has ever posted.
Facts are welcome.
I offered the challenge, and I already know the answer. If you would like to be enlightened, go do the research yourself. Try Google, maybe enter "lithium ion" or any one of a number of other highly polluting battery types. Find out for yourself what it takes to make these batteries....even the ones in your cellphone.
That fact is that none of them are good for the environment. But, we as lazy humans require them and therefore are responsible for the pollutants that the create.
I think you'll find there is no gain.
Along the same line, it takes almost the equivalent of a gallon of gasoline to produce a gallon of ethanol. See? No gain. (Matter of fact, we end up with a loss. If most of the corn crop is going toward bio-fuels, that leaves a shortage of corn for the table and corn meal for livestock. That means an increase in food prices due to the shortage. Sounds to me like the gummint, who subsidizes farming for bio-fuels in a big way, is trying to make all of us dependent on the gummint.)
Does that mean we should stop looking for a replacement fuel? By no means. Just means that if they have to lie to get people on board with an alternative, it is likely a scam.
I believe hydrogen fuel is probably the best not-too-distant alternative.
Hydrogen is the fuel of promise, but it remains highly explosive. Hopefully someone will find an economical way to stabilize it soon.
A few other things to ponder.
It really is irrelevant how many btu's it takes to make etoh. It is the form of the fuel which is important. Consider the btu's of energy equivalent coal, oil, or gas that it takes to make a kilowatt of electricity. Very inefficient but it is the form of energy (electric power in this case) which is important. Ethanol fuel and bio diesels are realistic alternatives. The real challenge is producing these without impacting the worlds food supply. The environment doesn't have to suffer in order for us to utilize alternative energy sources but some environmentalist may need to be made to suffer. The most environmentally friendly sources of energy are those some folks scream loudest about. If we set a goal that in 20 years we would supply all of our electrical energy needs through nuclear, hydro, wind, tidal, or solar, we could do so and not impact the environment in the least. In fact there would be a net gain to our fight against global warming and the production of greenhouse gases. For other fuels we need to encourage a return to the farm. There is enough farrow farm land in SC to be used to meet the family transportation fuel needs of this state. Crops such as sugar cane, beets, and possibly some date palms could produce vast quantities of fuel without impacting the production of food crops.
It simply takes a classical approach. That is we need a consortium of government, business, and universities to work together for this goal. Probably won't happen in my lifetime but I sure hope our kids do a better job than we did in facing this issue.

Developers have already taken over on Fripp, Dataw, and Daufuskie, and have almost completely developed these islands. Where have you been?
It's obvious from most of her posts that she doesn't get out much.

No I mean developing it in the wrong ways like putting Mcdonalds and Wal-marts and stuff like that there.
Marissa, have you ever been to Fripp, Dataw, or Daufuskie? There isn't room for a Walmart, and a McDonald's would be a little out of place. Then again, I've never been to Daufuskie, so I can't say what's there. Maybe they have a McDonald's.
Maybe the reason these types of "wrong" developments cannot be found on Fripp, Dataw, and Daufuskie is that there is no demand for them there. Why would a perfectly self-respecting business owner want to build a business where he couldn't make money? The builders of condos and monstrous beach houses certainly haven't hesitated to develop these islands.
And one other small point...Fripp, Dataw, and Daufuskie are still private properties, where any type of development must be approved in order to happen. Beaufort is not private property, and the law says that people can do what they want with their property, within reason. Sorry, it's a fact of life.
Some day I hope to open a chain of alternative fuel service station's which sell only ethanol. I'm calling it "Drink and Drive". You can fill up your car and your jug.
However there would be no drinking from the nozzle allowed.
You could call the parent corporation ENRUN!
Ok well what about Lady's island and St.Helena island. There was no demand for a Wal-mart or large condos there amongs other things.Actually with many of these new developments, there is usually no demand from the citizens who live there. And trust me if they continue to have there way with Lady's island, whose to say they won't go for Dataw or Fripp or any other island. Now they might not get to build there fast food restaurant and what not there. But they will surely try eventually and then it will be a never ending fight to protect these islands from over developments. And as for no room, trust me they will make room. Also if there was more access to these islands like another bridge to Fripp. Then developers would start looking at it more.
you really need to get out more. Spend less time at your keyboard attempting to discuss things you know NOTHING about. Get outside, breathe fresh air. You could learn something.
It is a stretch but it could happen.

lol, funny but you even said it yourself "It could happen"
The Walmart on Lady's Island HAS NOT BEEN BUILT, and quite possibly, never will be. (Thank God). The developers of the condos on LI obviously believe there is a market for them. I can assure you, Marissa, no one is going to try to build a McDonald's on Dataw or Fripp. And if they did, the residents and owners of those gated communities would reward them with a good swift kick in the a@#, and they would go away. Now why on earth would anyone build another bridge to Fripp???? BTW, Fripp is almost at build-out. There is no way they could "make room" for a Walmart, even if someone was misguided enough to think it might make money.
Actually, if the wetlands and marshes were able to be filled in for development, then Fripp could easily build more homes out here. In fact, there's probably easily enough room for a Wal-Mart out here if some of the marshes adjoining the island are filled in. (Fripp is actually moving to create more lots on the island by filling in a golf course pond.)
Ultimately, the question has to be about the type of development we want in our community or state. Our community is going to grow; the question is where the growth will occur and how. There are thousands of acres of land that is already available for development; why in the world then do we need to fill in marshland for development? Development that destroys the essence of what makes coastal South Carolina so wonderful is ultimately counter-productive to the economic survival of our state.
The wetlands and marshes are NOT able to be filled in for development, so it's a moot point. Which golf course pond? And where did you get your info, because I am aware of a lot of happenings on Fripp, and this is a new one on me.
Why are they taking away our history? Those developers they are nothing but greedy, selfish, and people with no sence of natural beauty. All they see is $$$'s. All over the world there are developers taking away beautiful places and claime that it is for the best, whats the word? oh yeah PROGRESS, for who? You know how meny citys built for progress that have a high numbers of homeless and unemployed people? And it's not getting any better. And now they are in Beaufort brainwashing the people with money. Those who are selling to the people, you are so wrong to do so because, you don't realize what our great great grand parents, our great grand parents and, our grand parents had to do to have a place for all of us to call home? Do you want Beaufort to be come another Hilton Head? I would like to come home one day and still reconize my hometown. It makes me sad. The last time I was home it made me sad because, so much is going. Beaufort is going to be like some places here in California, foney. And most of all Beaufort wont be Beaufort when those developers start cutting down the trees. That's what cleans the air for us. To bad some places here in Cali don't know that, or they know but, trees get in the way of PROGRESS.
Yes I agree all the way.Trees clean the air and the reason why many city's are so dirty and have so much air polution and it's because there are no trees or not many at least. But these developers won't ruin our town as long as the residents speak up about. It's just too bad that not enough people went to the polls about Whale branch, though no one knows the real reason that they are building it in the first place.I am still amazed that developers can come in our town with some new development that will make them money. Then cut our trees down and destroy whatever wildlife that was living in it.Then try to convince people that it's for the people or for the greater good. And the meaning of progress is to gain something or make something better. So when you are cutting down all those trees and leaving and eye sore on an area, when there's not even a need or even a want by the people who live there then how are you making it better.I mean it's not like these developers are building anything that we actually need since saying we have everything we Need in Bft as it is.Besides most people who live here never asked for things in Beaufort such as new expensive condos, large hotels that block any marsh view that was ever there or more and more real estate agents offices. How do these things actually benefit us?The answer is that they don't they mainly benefit the greedy money hungry developers, who come and build here, just so they can get some more money, then leave.
I agree with what you are saying. Right now they are having well they say a problem with mountain lions, coyotes, bears, and other animals that was there first anyway. They call it a problem. They don't realize that the problem is the developers. They build and build and build tell they build on top of any thing and it's not that anyone can afford these places. But they claim that they don't understand why these animals are coming so close to there home. Well DUH They tear their homes down take away their food suply and exspect them to stay out in what ever woods are left. I swear some people are about as smart as a box of rocks. Even a rock knows when to stay and when to fall. Where else are these animals suppose to live and eat. They aint stupid they get hungry they look for food where ever they can. I swear GREED & POWER it's a WICKED THING.
