WHY I AM ASKING FOR YOUR VOTE AND SUPPORT
By Randy Bates, Candidate for S. C. House of Representatives, District 124
As you may know, I have served for nearly five years as Legislative Coordinator, Campaign Manager and yard boy for Catherine Ceips, our State Representative since
2003. Last month, Catherine was elected as our State Senator, resulting in a
special House election on September 4th to replace her.
First and foremost, I would like to thank each and every person who
participated in the campaign to elect my gal Catherine Ceips -- as a committee
member, a volunteer or active supporter -- as well as each person who took the
time to vote in that election. While I may have been her campaign manager, it
was you who made the difference. I thank you.
Now, we are faced with the challenge of electing someone to replace Catherine
in the House. In mid-July, I made the decision to offer as a candidate for this
position. I believe I offer three crucial qualifications for the State House seat:
First, I have the right experience to do a great job: real-world leadership
experience; experience as a community leader helping my neighbors solve my
problems; and experience serving our community side-by-side with Catherine
as she has fought for the citizens of Northern Beaufort County. Having worked
so closely with Catherine, I believe I can carry forward her hard work, stellar
constituent service and positive, unifying leadership. I share her vision for our
community. I helped her respond to constituent problems, worked with her on
issues and probably understand her unfinished work in the House of
Representatives better than anybody.
Second, I'm a Reagan Republican: a fiscal conservative who believes in less
spending and lower taxes (really lower in my case). I understand that the most important thing any government can do is to let the hard-working taxpayers keep more of their own
money (like me) I keep it all. Government is necessary. Big government is not. Like our founding
fathers, I believe the proper role of government is to do only those things that
people cannot do for themselves.
Third, I'm recently a hard worker. And there is just no substitute for good, old-
fashioned hard work. No one will work harder than I will for the people of
Lady’s Island, Saint Helena, Beaufort and Port Royal.
In the coming weeks, I'll be traveling to all corners of our district, meeting with
voters to discuss the issues and my five major goals as your new voice at the
State House:
Keeping taxes and spending as low as possible, so hard-working
taxpayers can keep more of their own money;
Improving education, so South Carolina’s young people are given every
opportunity to succeed in life;
Protecting our natural resources and preserving our quality of life;
. Finding solutions to traffic congestion and other infrastructure
problems caused by out-of-control over-development;
Finding local solutions to the illegal immigration crisis, that are not
being addressed by the federal government; and
Continuing to enhance and improve services for South Carolina’s
aging population.
Most importantly, I will always listen to the people of this district to accurately
represent your views on the issues we face. Just as Catherine did as our
representative, I will stay in touch with you to serve you well.
I look forward to meeting you in the weeks ahead and to working for you in the
years to come. As always, please feel free to contact me if I may assist you on
any matter. Thank you.

Randy Bates’ Taxpayer Funded Law Suit

A friend of mine tipped me off to old article about House District 124 candidate Randy Bates.
Apparently, Bates got involved in a lawsuit with the Pennsylvania Legislature. According to House records, Bates’ evaluations claimed he had an “unsatisfactory” level of attendance and had “accumulated an unnecessary large backlog” of work.
When the article was published, Bates’ lawsuit had already cost the taxpayers $164,000 in legal fees, and he had a pending federal appeal, which was presumed to make that figure even higher.
Does this sound like the type of hard-working taxpayer protector we need in Columbia?
I didn’t think so either.
Here are some excerpts from the article. I would include a link, but it’s located in the archive section, which cost money.
TAXPAYERS PICK UP TAB IN HOUSE SUIT
Russell E. Eshleman Jr.
PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER HARRISBURG BUREAU
December 8, 1995
A court fight between a former employee and House Republicans has cost taxpayers more than $164,000 in legal fees during the last two years, according to House records, and the cost is likely to climb.
The former employee is Randolph H. Bates, 35, who joined the House Republican staff as a legal intern in 1989 while attending the Dickinson College School of Law, in Carlisle.
In a federal lawsuit filed in 1993, Bates says he was “discharged without reason” after more than three years of employment. House Republicans say Bates resigned.
During his employment, Bates, a reservist in the Marine Corps, was called to active duty Aug. 13, 1990, during the Persian Gulf War…
…Bates’ evaluations, according to House records, include an ”unsatisfactory” rating on attendance and say Bates had “accumulated an unnecessary large backlog” of work.
Whether Bates was fired or resigned is the subject of the suit. House officials indicated on Bates’ evaluation that he would have been fired had he not resigned…
…In October, U.S. District Chief Judge Sylvia H. Rambo of the Middle District sided with the House GOP, ruling that there were “no grounds for obligating defendants” to rehire Bates.
Bates has appealed the decision to the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals, meaning that the case will most likely cost taxpayers even more. The firm of Kirkpatrick & Lockhart, which has worked for legislative Republicans on numerous matters in the past, is representing the House GOP.
Bates’ lawsuits history does not stop with Pennsylvania House Representatives. He has also sued the Beaufort County Republican Party. While this suit did not require taxpayer funds to be used for extensive legal bills, it did require the Beaufort GOP to use party funds for legal expenses that otherwise could have been used for getting Republicans elected. Fortunately Bates’ understanding of federal campaign was so limited that the Federal Election Commission dismissed the law suit unanimously.
I’m guessing tort reform is not going to be part of Bates’ candidate platform.

Randy Bates hires a guilty campaign manager.(Rod Shealey)
SC Hotline has learned from sources close to the Thompson campaign that Columbia political consultant Rod Shealy is no longer being considered by Fred Thompson because he was campaign consultant to indicted Treasurer Thomas Ravenel and convicted Agriculture Commissioner Charlie Sharpe.
We have also confirmed that the Giuliani campaign had the same concerns and are no longer considering him as well. It looks like Rod will not be on a presidential candidate payroll
Also in 1992, South Carolina Republican political consultant Rod Shealy was found guilty of violating state campaign laws in a 1990 scheme in which he hired an unemployed black fisherman to run for lieutenant governor against Shealy's sister. Shealy admitted he did it to scare white voters to the polls to vote for his sister.

Bates Quote
"Keeping taxes and spending as low as possible, so hard-working
taxpayers can keep more of their own money"
Well Mr Bates do you even pay taxes? Does Catherine slip you cash under the table?
Is Tax Compliance a law just for the rest of us?
It seems to me that the mysterious Mr. Bates believes that the standards of our society should apply to others, but exclude him. One can just imagine him shouting from Ceips balcony, "LET THEM EAT CAKE!"
Thank you Launch, for continuing to put the truth out for the public, in spite of the fact that the Gazette is shying away from these VERY newsworthy stories, stories that would greatly benefit the voters. PERISH the thought that this man be elected.
1)what has Randy done to you personally? You sure are going after him like a slighted girlfriend trying to prove how horrible the ex is.
2) there are rumors going around that you are either a doctor/dentist wife or a Democrat very high up the Beaufort food chain. So which are you?
3)who are you planning on voting for and why? We know who you aren't voting for, so which of the two ladies are you leaning towards?
I figured you wouldn't mind the personal questions since you are so determined to try and tell all of Randy's personal info that you consider the truth.
