What is going to happen to the Port of Port Royal....
I grew up in Port Royal. I remember my dad used to keep his old bateaux down at what we called "the docks" near where the boat landing is today. He would pull his old bateaux up on land next to several other boats, put an anchor out, leave his fishing rods and tackle in the boat and come back the next weekend to take it out with all of his gear still there. Then one day a neighbor got some of his stuff stolen out of his boat (mid sixties). After that day boats were kept on trailers in people yards. I was only 5 or 6 years old, but I'm pretty sure I remember this correctly.
My point is Port Royal has always been a special place to me. A place shared by the community. Instead of selling the property to the highest bidding developer, who will build retail shops, condo's and whatever else. Why not find a top notch charity or organization looking for a place to call home and donate the land. I'm talking about a St. Judes Hospital, or Shriners Hospital type place. Possibly a research center. Something that will bring good jobs to the community. Not just retail type jobs, but jobs for professionals.
It is a beautiful piece of property. It would be great if we could make it a special place.
