If it were actually this straightforward and easy to do!
I’m against the $85,000,000,000.00 bailout of AIG.
Instead, I’m in favor of giving $85,000,000,000 to America in a "We Deserve It Dividend".
To make the math simple, let’s assume there are 200,000,000 bonafide U.S. Citizens 18+.
Our population is about 301,000,000 +/- counting every man, woman and child. So 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 and up. So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billon that equals $425,000.00.
My plan is to give $425,000 to every person 18+ as a We Deserve It Dividend.
Of course, it would NOT be tax free.
So let’s assume a tax rate of 30%.
Every individual 18+ has to pay $127,500.00 in taxes. That sends $25,500,000,000 right back to Uncle Sam. But it means that every adult 18+ has $297,500.00 in their pocket. A husband and wife has $595,000.00. What would you do with $297,500.00 to $595,000.00 in your family?
Pay off your mortgage – housing crisis solved.
Repay college loans – what a great boost to new grads
Put away money for college – it’ll be there
Save in a bank – create money to loan to entrepreneurs.
Buy a new car – create jobs
Invest in the market – capital drives growth
Pay for your parent’s medical insurance – health care improves
Enable Deadbeat Dads to come clean – or else
Remember this is for every adult U S Citizen 18+ including the folks who lost their jobs at Lehman Brothers and every other company that is cutting back. And of course, for those serving in our Armed Forces.
If we’re going to re-distribute wealth let’s really do it...instead of trickling out a puny $1,000.00 ( “vote buy” ) economic incentive that is being proposed by one of our candidates for President. If we’re going to do an $85 billion bailout, let’s bail out every adult U S Citizen 18+!
As for AIG – liquidate it. Sell off its parts. Let American General go back to being American General. Sell off the real estate. Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean it up.
Here’s my rationale. We deserve it and AIG doesn’t.
Sure it’s a crazy idea that can “never work.”
But can you imagine the Coast-To-Coast Block Party!

I trust my fellow adult Americans to know how to use the $85 Billion.
We Deserve It Dividend more than I do the geniuses at AIG or in Washington DC . And remember, this plan only really costs $59.5 Billion because $25.5 Billion is returned instantly in taxes to Uncle Sam.

I haven't done the math, but I'll take your word for it.
I remember back early in the Clinton years when I was told we were spending $40,000 per homeless person per year (my guess is that is double by now). I thought, for that why not just buy em a house. Paid for in 2 years.

Ron Paul - I'm telling you the guy makes sense . . . too much common sense if you ask me.
Adracer has a GREAT idea - but think of the inflation that'll cause - every married couple gets $850k and pretty soon Bud will run out of beer.
Now, I'd use to pay OFF my mortgages, pay my taxes, and deal with the fallout of the collapse of AIG's paper.
The reality is people will stop bargaining over stuff, prices will rise, and pretty soon it'll cost $75 for a beer at Brewers.

So simple, So logical. You're right that it would never work, it makes entirely too much sense. Hard working Americans spend our lives raking and saving at every opportunity just to try to be comfortable if we make it to retirement and hopefully be able to provide a better life for our kids.

Let's make the math a little easier:
Simply cancel out all the common zeros and divide the leftovers (first canceling out the common zeros does the same math, but makes it easier for you to see by pre-dividing both numbers by 100,000,000).
Since "200 million" (="200,000,000" called the divisor) has eight zeros in common with the nine zeros from "85 billon" (="85,000,000,000" called the dividend), canceling out all the common zeros between the dividend & divisor leaves you with 850 (dividend), which you then just divide by 2 (divisor).
850/2=425
So the cited/suggested "bailout" result would really only be 425 per person over 18, NOT 425,000.
Alternatively, on a Windows computer, the "mathematically-challenged" can simply click: Start, Run, and then type: "calc" and hit "Enter" or "return". The calculator should appear.

Its public school graduates all right. We have a serious cash flow issue brought on directly by cash flowing out of this country via oil. Hundreds of billions every year now. We have the left who has successfully blocked one form of energy production after another blaming everyone else but the people who caused the cash flow problem. They did. Can you blame foriegn investors for pulling their money out they made on the oil they sold us because the dollar isn't worth what it was? I don't.
That no one would do the math. Since we have become a nation of lemmings, this was an exercise designed to see who would read it and just accept it as fact and who would really "do the math".
