illegal alien construction

Story I just heard....small sub-contractor bids for jobs with builder, sub-contractor is required to provide all his info, business / builder's license, etc. when he submits his bid. Builder does not use the subcontractor, but awards the job to another subcontractor (who has illegal workers) and uses first subcontractors builder's and business license info that was given in the bid.

First subcontractor hears a rumor and goes down to the building permit office and finds there are 6 or 7 jobs being built under the his contractor's licenses and he hasn't even been on site. The illegal subcontractor is using workers who aren't legally documented and undercutting the rest of the subcontractors.

Guy went down to the county to complain and they have really been dragging their feet. The "legal" subcontractor is listed as the builder and is liable for any issues for up to 13 years...somebody ouhtta go to jail for this!

"...My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious..."

We hear stories all the time, but until they're proven, they're just stories.

The guy who is the "legal" subcontractor is a friend of mine, heard it straight from him. He has filed a complaint with the state because of lack of response by Beaufort County, inspector is coming down to check into the complaint.

for the contractor and the sub-contractor using false documents and license. Stiff fines and jail time. An example needs to be made so others don't do the same.

I hope something TRULY gets done about this, aside from the usual slap on the wrist. It's a shame that there are so many contractors out of work and some legal (but unethical) contractor will hire illegal workers to abstain from paying the taxes associated with having employees...some of which are veterans (the workers that is). Another shame is that their profit margin is not cut, only the pay that the illegal worker is willing to work for.

BTW: I have a small veteran owned business that only hires legal employment, I am a citisen of this country by birth....play by the rules by choice... and have it in the back of my mind that the majority of homeless people are actually veterans.

Maybe the homeowner that hires the contractor should also be held liable to some extent?

ALSO I think this should be made an example of-beings how our jail's seem to be to full to pursue illegal's -LET'S MAKE ROOM FOR THESE GUY'S and perhaps businesses will start taking the law trying to be established about hiring illegals. The homeowners hiring illegals should be held just as acountable as a business owner hiring illegal's is SUPOSE to be punished.

UNTIL people see some action and read in it the papers about hiring illegal's nobody will take this law seriously = making a joke of our laws. They make laws one day saying finally something will be done about illegal's here & soon there after are quoted in local papers stating there is no room in our jails and how all of a sudden after (Beaufort has survived very nicely)stating we best rethink the finacial aspects of getting rid of the illegals cluttering our judical system, schools, roads and businesses amoung so many other places!

When parents state the law in their households & don't enforse it what do you think happens? NOBODY takes them seriously & will continue pushing their limits.Does this make sence to you too?

It is no more my responsibility to check the legal status of the employees of a company that cuts my lawn or paint my house than it is for me to check the legal status of the cook and wait staff at the restaurant I eat at or the legal status of the mechaninc at the dealership where I have my car serviced.

Just as I am able to ask the General Contractor or company that requests my services, so are you (the homeowner) able to simply ask if the company utilizes illeagal help. I have asked this question of several major contractors and by their reply I was able to acquire an answer. It's not hard to ask and simply ascertain an answer. The homeowner can also talk to the workers while they are working. The bottom line is that it is about the ethical responiblitity of the one that pays for a service. We ought to help our neighbor...but take care of our own house first. If I need to explain: take care of our citizens first, then help our foreign neighbors. There are enough Americans with a family that need an income for us to have the moral fortitude to simply find out if Americans are employed. It may be OK for a homeowner to save a few bucks "illegally"...I sleep better at night hiring legal employment. Citizenship simply has rights...try working in New Zealand, Germany, or for the heck of it go to South America and try to be treated like a citizen of one of the countries there.

It's also nice to know I can look up the criminal history of my employees. Homeowner...or company, it's nice to know I don't have a criminal, rapist, molestor, or thief scoping my house. I would rather KNOW I have legal employees simply because of liability and my customers don't have to worry about who is stalking around their home and neighborhood.
