shopping in Beaufort rant...
Discovering a seep under the kitchen sink, I spent 45 minutes pulling and pretty much destroying the drain assembly connecting my sink to the garbage disposal. Carefully cleaned it up, went to the local "box" store and handed it to a sales associate wearing a name tag and under it "plumbing". Guy looked at it, asked me what it was from (not a good sign) I told him it was the drain assembly that went to the kitchen garbage disposal...he stated he'd "never seen anything like that". We walked over to the display and looked at everything on the shelf - had something similar, but guy said it was the "new" type of drain and connector, wouldn't fit what I had ??? I'm like WHAT?..there has to be 10 million more like mine - house is only about 10 years old....he tells me they don't carry it and suggests I re-caulk the one I have to seal the leak (hands me a container of plumbers putty) - then looks at the damage I've done trying to get it apart - looks at me like I'm an idiot - says maybe I can use some glue to caulk the damaged areas.
After discussing the situation with the wife, think maybe what the heck, prob could replace the old sink and faucett anyway - so back to the same store and are checking out the sinks...while standing there, glanced over at the garbage disposal display and right there is a box with a picture of what I need....I grab the box and pull it out - empty...wouldn't you know it...
Associate says they have "4 on order"......don't know when they're coming in - but the store in Bluffton has 2.
...an while I'm on THIS store - I hate going to their nuts and bolts center, opening draws looking for a simple nut or bolt and most of the drawers are either empty or what's there is all mixed up - don't these people inventory and re-order what's sold out?
oh, btw, I fixed the sink with a little redneck engineering and plenty of plumber's putty - maybe he guy was right after all, saved me about $30 for the part.

I loved that comment. I find that level of frustration here - I'm thinking maybe someone needs to open a store that says: "We have stuff not like Beaufort."
You probably just needed to retighten the fitting that was loose, ya know! And instead of plumbers putty, duct tape on the threads works too!
no, the paper washer and rubber gasket between the "nut" and the bottom of the sink was...well....mush....tried to tighten it up a little - no go...
It seems that the day of the good ole plumbing supply house or even a "real" hardware store are a thing of the past. obsolete dinosaurs outmoded by todays one size fits all big box conglomerate staffed by persons who would'nt know teflon tape from teflon Don. I miss the Forhams hardwares and the western autos of Beauforts past and I bet I'm not alone. So much for "progress"!!
how hard can it be? I watched three guys who could not speak english put a shower on the beach in 30 minutes. I don't miss Fordham's. I paid $40.
when's the last time you tried to replace the gaskets on a 10 year old basket strainer assy.? Not as easy as it sounds, without the right tools it can be a lesson in frustration. and they dont come with instructions in spanish either.
and remember everythignis made out of PLASTIC....any pressure and it cracks when it gets a little age on it... I broke one of the ears off the nut, then the whole dang assembly was turning - drilled a hole thru the bottom of the assembly, in one side and out the other, stuck a screwdriver thru the hole so I could hold the flange and turn the nut...
I did last week. $85 to st.helena. Not a bad deal.
When frustrated, don't forget about Grayco. Yep,it's a drive, but you'll probably be less stressed.

and they are so easy with the "you can do this" ! Great help when you have the time to do it yourself!

drove from the box to Grayco - they didn't have it either..
A very good old-time hardware store try http://yellowpages.savannah.com/Maycrest+Hardware+Center.262135.7091264.home.html If they don't have the replacement parts, they will stay with you until one is located. This means they will find the parts, order them, have them sent to your door. Most parts for older systems are on hand, in stock. They have even tracked a hard to get part, for me, from a competitor and had it in my hand before I left their store. Worth a visit...but always bring all related parts.
and a great tip for old-time hardware
Shh...might wake ole Cali boy from his slumber. Might get me for a non-paying ad or something. But as it goes, too many good folks living in yesterday's houses, Not to post.
