Welcome to Zooville - the 1960's all over again

Today's state paper has an article about a group of people who have been living in tents close to the Columbia Zoo. The gallery of photos are very interesting to view, and they remind me of 1968 when a band of "hippies" invaded my small PA town and set up shop in a closed-down old state hospital ground.

Is this where we are now as a result of the Iraq War situation? Is this where we are now because some of our people can't afford a place to live for whatever reasons?

The gallery of photos is a link from the article: "Welcome to Zooville" in

Did you bother to read the entire article? About half of them are homeless; there have been homeless since biblical times (remember Jesus?), so don't throw in the war and the poor state of education, or the military. There will always be homeless no matter what the state of the economy, too. Some people just prefer that lifestyle, as this article shows. One man said he'd rather be there than in any apartment.

There are also college students who wanted to hang-out for the summer. There are people who are choosing to be there.

There are still lots of little groups like this. I know the cops have come down hard on the rainbow gatherings too. Sad. I spent some time in a commune, just weekend visits, but I loves the organic feel of the place. The natural foods, the friendly smiles, everyone working together to live together. I see people work harder and be happier in communal living situation. Sad to see one person ruin it.
