how we can help

the fastest way to lower gas prices is through reducing consumption. we can help in many ways by slowing down and using alternatives. i would like to see speed limits dropped. i would like the right lanes of all 4 lanes in beaufort and port royal be limited to 30 mph, and all 2 lanes lowered to 30. we could then legalize golf carts, bikes, mopeds, etc to get around town instead of using gas autos. if we use less the price of gas should come down. if it doesn't, we can still get around with our alternatives.

dannyb9 - what if I don't care? What if I like going 45? I know 'you' would like to see 30mph as the speed limit - what if I think 50 is a better and safe number? Does that preclude you from driving 30? No - it DOES NOT. But YOUR idea prevent ME from doing what I want.

If YOU want to drive 30 then drive 30 - there is nothing stopping you from doing that right this moment.

You can see immediately the issue is control and not 'saving gas.' What if I simply do not care what gas costs? $4, $8, $22 a gallon? There ARE people out there who simply do not care.

Why should your need to control limit my choice? I'm not trying to rape, murder or pillage here - we are talking about a speed limit. Why does your choice control my choice? You see the dilemma. It is not simply about 'what makes sense' because what makes sense in 2008 with $4 gas was absurd in 2000 with $1 gas - absurdity is not an a priori fact - it is situational.

If ANYONE wants to drive slower to save gas, raise the summer temps to 80F, lower the winter temps to 62F, convert to a Hybrid or a bicycle - YOU CAN DO THAT NOW - THERE IS NO REASON WHY THE GOVERNMENT HAS TO TELL YOU TO DO IT.

Yes - I was shouting - this kind of asinine logic is how we've gotten ourselves in this mess with program after program after program designed to save someone else from the consequences of their own bad choices. . . and get us $4 trillion in debt as a nation.

Finally, how many BILLIONS were spent on ethanol, and now all of a sudden we get the 'oops,' maybe the savior of the generation and the path to energy independence might have been a little off. Why don't liberal spewing this garbage EVER apologize. 'Gee, I'm sorry for Cabrini Green. I'm sorry for wanting to cave into the Soviets, the Surge, yeah, that was a good idea too. Ooops, my bad. Maybe I'm wrong on this global warming thing too - " Idiots.

Remind me never to make Joe mad!!
Joe, I think he was joking! Or at least I hope the whole thing was a joke! Can't you see Ribaut Road or better yet...Highway 21 filled with mopeds and golf carts!!
And I guess, you leave for work an hour early so that you can get there on time! Feel sorry for the poor souls that drive to Hilton Head to work everyday! :)

no, not mad, just frustrated. . .why does every little challenge in the world seem to require a government reaction to it.

If we examine it - so we change the speed limit [?] to accommodate golf carts, scooters, bikes and whatnot, what about the poor schlubs driving old cars that put out more pollution at 30 than at 45. Then we have bicyclists and scooterists who are breathing air that is above the recommended EPA CO levels. Those folks start complaining, and we then need a program to buy back the polluting cars. Then, those folks don't have anything to drive, and we then need to have low-income golf cart and scooter program for those unable to help themselves. Mind you, we just bought their old junker from them but they do not have enough money to go buy a golf cart at Bill's Liquors or from Sutcliffe's.

Then we realize that there are so many scooters and golf carts that we need to regulate them so we have a license tag program, but that does not fund itself, so we need to raised taxes a little to fund those bureaucrats. Then we need to prevent underage drivers from driving carts so we have laws for that, and need to enforce the laws, and training classes for scooterists and pretty soon its completely out of control since now people wants a little mini-parking garage downtown for the scooters and golf carts.

Pretty soon one little do-gooder idea blossoms into a massive bureaucracy which costs millions per year to administer all because instead of individuals exercising a little choice and doing what works for them personally, they try to foist a good idea on everyone else. Substitute health care, global warming, energy policy, $600 Pentagon airplane toilet wrenches and pretty soon you get to where we are now as a nation.

You make a good point but please calm down. No more coffee for you today. Don't make me get a law passed for a coffee buy back program.

actually, I was listening to Barack over the internet- his ignorance gets me so riled up. Then the other folks who think our economic situation is somehow unique . . . isn't history still a required topic?

You're not going far enough, Danny. Why even have vehicles at all? If we all switch to golf carts, then electricity will go up, and you'll be on here telling us to read only in the daytime so we don't have to turn the lights on and to watch TV with our neighbors. Kinda like carpooling for your TV.
What if we just switch to bicycles? After a while, once we get in shape, we'll be able to pedal at close to 20mph, and thus we'll never get a ticket for speeding once you get the speed limits reduced, but we’ll still be getting there in a reasonable time. Why even stop there though? Since we're all so fat, let's just start walking, even running, to work. We can kill two birds with one stone. For the wealthy, they can have one of those carts pulled by one of their servants that you see in the Chinese movies. I don't know what they’re called, but if you've seen an old karate movie, you know what I'm talking about.
OH...WAIT!!! It just hit me...let's just get rid of PETA and go back to the 19th century and start using horse carriages again...duh!
Guess what...You can do all of that if you want...right now. Just don't assume the rest of us want to as well.
Interesting thoughts though...if your name is Gore or Obama, surely they will still ride the Lincolns and Suburbans and private jets, but they’re better and smarter than us.
I’m all for not wasting, but let’s not go crazy here. If I wanted to live the Cuban way, I’d move to Cuba. Here’s a crazy thought. Let’s increase supply. That might just work too.
