More on John McCain-The USS Forrestall Fire
One day in the Gulf of Tonkin, about 10:50 (local time) on the 29th of July 1967, an F-4 Phantom located on the starboard side of the stern of the USS Forrestal, was being loaded with two Zuni rocket pods each with 4x4 inch diameter rockets designed for air to ground ops.
On the left side of the ship on the angle deck was an A-4 Skyhawk, manned by John McCain. Static electrictiy in the pod loaded aboard the F-4 caused one rocket to go off and strike both McCain's A-4 and Lt White's aircraft next to McCain's.
This scene has been shown to millions of sailors since 1967. It is a training film of an actual accident that took the lives of over a hundred men.
On the plat recorder, a film recorder that records everything on the flight deck 24 hours a day, it showed the rocket hitting McCain's A-4, dropping his 1000 pound bomb on the flight deck below his aircraft, and catching his two 2000 pound drop tanks on fire. McCain is seen climbing over the nose of the A-4 some 12 feet off the deck and crawling over the nose to the fuel probe and jumping amidst the fire to the deck below to escape. He is assited away from the fire by flight deck personnel. The ensuing fire and other spilled fuel fed the flames. Some pilots ran through the flames to escape. Others ejected and were picked up by escorting ships. Lt White escaped his aircraft, but the 1000 pound bomb heated over and exploded killing many flight deck personnel, pilots and crewmembers. The USS Forrestall was in trouble. It took the efforts of thousands to overcome this disaster.
McCain was injured badly and returned to duty 6 weeks later with another A-4 Squadron. In his first week, he was shot down over North Vietnam.
For those of you who think Obama is more qualified than McCain, think again. McCain is the gutsiest son of a bitch I have ever seen.

I have a video of the Forrestal engulfed in flames and McCain's unbelieveable escape - incredible - the man did what he had to do to.
This "hussein" candidate, oh my God, how could this country ever elect him President of The United States??
There is no question where Senator McCain's loyalty is. Look at the history of the two presidential candidates.
I am voting for McCain, and I pray the majority of this country votes for McCain also.
He may not be the "perfect" candidate, but he is the best candidate by a country mile.
We know where his loyalty lies. I have a big question mark inside my head with anybody who has "hussein" as a part of his name.
You wont vote for someone because of his middle name??? Are you a complete moron or just a total bigot!
Wake up and smell the roses...Bush has failed this country, McCain may be war hero, and yes he did go thru hell while in prison, but that dont qualify you to be president. Use your brain...make your choices on whats best for the country, not on retarded redneck reasoning.
Obama '08
Pray tell...what qualifies Obama to be POTUS?
I check Huffington Post every now and then, which is a liberal web site, just to see what liberals are talking about. Most of the articles and comments are shallow with no intellectual discussions. Apparently the posters care about what the government will do for them and the "rights" for entitlements. The country's founders must be turning over in their graves.
One blog on Huffington Post was discussing Obama's and McCain's teeth. They must think we are electing a horse. For those not familiar with horses, the condition of a horse's teeth and gums are an indication of the general condition of the animal's health.
Many posters stated they would vote for Obama because he has a movie star smile with beautiful white teeth. Wow! So now the constitution has to now be amended to include white teeth as a requirement for POTUS. Did anyone feel that rumble in the nation's foundations?
So I posted that for their information, some of the older Democratic presidents had yellow teeth, like Roosevelt, Truman, Johnson, and Kennedy. They may not have had a movie star set of teeth, but they are all revered by Democrats as being great leaders.
The problem, it seems, is that no one other than a few of us, seems interested in the answer.
Make zero intellectual effort to select the next President and you get a President elected with zero intellectual effort. . . wait a moment- that happened in 1976 - ook how good THAT turned out.
The problem folks, is that the kids 18-39 have NEVER heard of Jimmy Carter's Presidency, and have ZERO idea who happens when you elect a nice guy with no relevant experience to be President. Given a list of people [Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Pete Rose and Kareem Abdul Jabaar - pick the President elected in 1976] I dare say that Reagan and Pete Rose would get more votes than Carter among Voters 18-36.
PLEASE, don't carry on about Bush 43 or Clinton in this debate - it is not about the past but today. The world was a different place in 2000 than it is now. . . at least to us.
Joe,
I completely agree with what you stated above. But, much of the debate centers around prior military experience. This issue arose when Clinton and GW were running for election. One was pegged as a draft dodger and the other as a slacker reservist who chose that route to avoid active duty and then failed to complete required service obligations. You stated the "nice guy" aspect of Carter, and I totally agree, he is a man of good moral character but was too nice by nature to be an effective President. He was however a former Naval Officer and had a good service record. FDR had no military experience yet he manned the helm to take the US out of the greatest economic disaster in our history and also got us successfully through WWII. Carter was a former Officer and yet he was totally impotent as our President. I don't think we can count on former military service as the main qualifier for effective leadership in the Presidency. McCain has no military command experience nor does Obama. Senatorial experience is also not command experience. The Senate and the House are both just very large committees with far too much power. We might want to remember that a donkey is a horse designed by committee. At least former Governors have had governmental leadership experience. I personally don't like any of our Presidential choices this year. Gulianni was the only one I could have voted for and he's been gone for a while now. Obama's fiscal policies would have to make it through Congress, so there is at least a meager set of checks and balances. McCain on the other hand seems to be at least as reactionary as GW, and look what that madman has gotten away with. And before you or anyone else says it, I voted for that madman twice (two of my few regrets on life)! GW hasn't saved us from anything, he's personally responsible for both the current $hitstorm that our kids are in in the middle east and for our current rotten economy. He's nothing more than someone who demands that our children do more than he did or would have done and then doesn't have the gonads to let them go in and finish the job he sent them to do. McCain has stated that he would keep us there for years, and that scares me a lot more than what Obama has indicated that he might do on any issue. Ask any Viet Nam vet if the war there could have been successfully prosecuted in a relatively short period of time if our troops would have been allowed by Johnson or Nixon to go in and get it done. Our kids are reliving that nightmare now, and they like their Viet Nam counterparts deserve better. My youngest daughter is presently a Lieutenant in the US Army. She is there by choice and is a tough as nails patriot who looks like a cover girl model. I am very proud of her (as I am of all of our military patriots), but, I do not wish to see her life wasted (or her 7 year old daughter to grow up an orphan) over a war against independent phantom enemies where there is no opposing government to vanquish. There is only one easy way to win in Iraq, and no President since Truman would ever unleash such weapons. We have allowed our leaders to mess this one up so badly that we will face an op-force in Iraq as long as we allow anyone who is indigenous there to continue breathing. If McCain would pull our troops back to a safe distance and then do the dirty deed and nuke the place on his first day in office I might be able to vote for him. God help us all if he or anyone else does that, but God save our kids....first and foremost! Remember, we lost but a handful of troops while defeating the Iraqi government...we have lost thousands of troops and civilians in the attempt to affect a peace there. We did not allow the Germans or Japanese to retain any arms after their defeat. Why did we not forcibly disarm all of the Iraqis immediately upon defeat while they were still in shock and then totally close their borders? Why has this madness been allowed to continue? Who amongst our citizenry has the answer? Certainly neither Obama or McCain! It's too bad John Wayne died and Rambo is fictional! Wars should not be necessary, but human nature dictates that they are. If one is fought, it should be done so with the single minded objective of complete submission by the fastest and most effective means before victory is declared. And then, the vanquished should remain totally vanquished until they get the picture and remain voluntarily submissive and respectful.
BTW, my comment a few days ago about McCain failing to avoid being shot down was totally out of line and I apologize. His military service, heroism, and level of patriotism goes without question. What I was feeling at the time and should have clearly stated is that his POW experience might just backfire at some point, and that would not be any fault of his. It is a relevant issue nonetheless.
Now there's a rant that could only be written by an extremely naive, ignorant and misinformed author!
Let us all pray that the scooters of the world are never put in charge of anything of significance.
Are you being ignored today? Is that why you brought your post above back to the top? Don't be so insecure, I've now recognized your importance and your wonderful incite, others will follow in time, relax. Did you forget your meds today? Did you have to kick start the bike, did the battery go dead, what? Are you OK...I'm really worried for you! I'm here for you!!!!! Brothers in the wind, ya know!
Excellent post topgunscooter. I completely agree that Americans/politicians will go to war, but lack the backbone to do what is necessary to win it. Chesty Puller and I both agree with your assessment of what could have been done in Vietnam.
May God be with you and your daughter during this difficult period for your family.
"May God be with you and your daughter during this difficult period for your family." And with all of our military patriots and their families!
While I agree with much of your military piece here,I was somewhat curious when you referred to Guiliani as your first preference for the Presidency ? Are you talking about the former top cop mayor Guiliani, who hired Bernard Kerik as the police commissioner in New York? I think he also later recommended him to President Bush to be head of Homeland Security. The recommendation was later withrawn/rejected after Mr. Kerik came under a cloud of suspicion and investigations about improprieties involving financial dealings. They also were close '911' business partners too, I believe. Wow, and he was mayor of big New York ! He never resigned either !
...about Rauch's resignation. I don't recall mayor Guiliani settling with the SEC on insider trading charges or concocting bribery schemes.
and I would again. America will remain under the curse of foreign oil dependence until Pete is put in the hall. Charlie Hustle is the man.
Wake up and smell the roses...Bush has failed this country,
Who has blocked nuclear, coal, oil exploration, oil refineries and now are after wind electric production. It ain't Bush, its your Barrack folks who are trying to wreck the economy in this country. Sorry but the roses at the white house will not be sniffed by barrack.
You say Bush has ruined the country. Where have I read that before? Oh yes, MoveON.org.
But you and the liberals have forgotten that we have a congress. The congress makes the laws. POTUS can agree and sign or he can veto. But he is not a CEO and has constitutional duties and limitations. You do remember that we have a constitution I hope.
The principal job of POTUS is to protect this nation as commander in chief of the armed forces. Since 9/11, we have had no attacks on the US. So you can sip your lattes in safety and comfort, thanks to G Bush.
If the country is ruined as you say, the congress has to be blamed. So what had the two Democratic leaders, Reid and Pelosi, done that would improve your outlook? That's right, NOTHING. Their main activity has been to hold investigations trying to get information to use in the election year. Has there been any bill presented by congress to "unruin" the nation as you say. No. None. Zilch.
Egret,
I totally agree with the philosophy you posted above. I do have to ask however why you apply this process to GW and seem to think Obama might have the power to act otherwise.
Not sure of your question. Would you rephrase it? Thanks.
I get the idea from comments you have previously made that you believe Obama could do damage to our country economically if elected. But, in the above post you correctly indicate that the President does not have such power. Seems contradictory to me.
Obama would still have the constitutional limits and duties as president. I am only one, but based on what I have read and understand about him, I could not vote for him.
I have posted before about the historical damages that a liberal president and congress has done, such as lowering our national defenses which placed the nation in a weak position since the 1930s. A nation with a weak defense has a weak position in diplomacy. As Teddy Roosevelt said, "Speak softly, but carry a big stick."
If the congress continues to be dominated by Democrats, Obama would sign bills that will lower the defense budget and increase spending on social programs. That is the historical legacy since the 1900s.
I don't hate Obama nor do I doubt his patriotism. But he has a record in the Illinois legislature and the US congress of supporting liberal bills. He has stated publicly that he will raise the taxes on the wealthy (whatever that will mean) and the corporate taxes and give the money to the lower and middle class.
This is a capitalistic nation and the profit motive has made us the greatest nation in the world. Even small investors can save money for retirement through IRAs. Those profits from those corporations show up as dividends for anyone invested and the dividends (divided profits) are the backbone of EVERYONE'S pension and retirement programs.
Taking away those profits and dividends defeats the purpose of investing. And yet Obama wants to tax those who have succeeded in business (the wealthy) and provided jobs. He wants to tax the profits and take away the dividends of all those investors and give it to low and middle income people. What have they done to deserve it? In this country we work for what we get.
Obama's vision will not help the economy in America. It will discourage investors to buy American stocks. They will buy foreign stocks like Mercedes, Toyota, and other profitable stocks. We need to ENCOURAGE American businesses to stay in America to provide American workers jobs. DISCOURAGING American businesses will make more of them move to other countries and hire foreign workers.
Obama is not the right candidate for the US. Maybe he would succeed in Cuba, but not the USA. McCain is the only candidate that will allow the US to succeed. He has the wisdom and good judgment and experience to become POTUS.
Neither candidate or any President can raise or lower taxes or set the defense budget. Congress does that. If given the choice between pulling a conservative or liberal Senator out of the Senate to serve as President I would rather see the conservative voice remain in Congress where he can do more. Like you said, the President is not a CEO. Political ideology such as liberal or conservative has far more power in Congress. A conservative President with a liberal Congress is limited in what he can get done, and vice versa.
In fact, I think it serves the balance of power better when the congress and POTUS is of different parties. We have seen in the past that having one party in power, regardless of party, can be undesirable. "Power corrupts". "Competition brings out the best in us." Having situations where debate and compromise is necessary is better for our nation.
Prior to the last election a guy I knew was an adamant Kerry supporter - seems his taxes every year were unbelieveable and he felt it was Bush's policies....blamed EVERYTHING on Bush....he finally took his taxes to another agency and they found all kinds of deductions the first preparers had consistantly missed...then he got to checking and found a lot of his personal property taxes were overcharges....
are you a fascis or a dick tator or belligerent nationalism and racism? i fought for your rights to. that is why i am a liberal. they protect free speach. enjoyed your views.
Aren't libs the ones trying to shut down conservative talk radio with their "fairness act"?
Also, how is their fight to protect the second amendment going?

Interesting are some of the things I read on this blog!
I see somebody got his dictionary back from the nursing home director.

What did I tell you about following me around? Do you think I'm a 12 year-old boy?
We all have that crazy uncle who'll say anything, but we all know he's crazy and just trying to get some attention, so for the most part we'll ignore him. Even the world of sports has them, Manny being Manny, Piniella being Piniella, Ozzie Guillen being Ozzie. They all do and say ridiculous things, but we consider the source, shake our heads and forget it after a dismissive grin. Once in a while though, one of those idiots crosses the line and becomes John Rocker, and then he can't be ignored.
You have something to say to me? Then say it, but be a man and don't hide behind some screen name. You can attack my spelling, or my grammar, or my opinions, or my looks, or my personality, or my political views all you want, even my name, since you seem to be infatuated by the fact that my name is Rafael.
But when you insinuated that I like to follow 12 tear-old boys around, you didn't just cross the line. You have driven through it with a Mac truck. Publicly lying about someone's integrity like you did is what cowards do. Them’s fighting words. It doesn't surprise me though coming from you because all you do on here is fire all kinds of sewage at anyone who dares disagree with you, but always under the cover of anonymity just like the coward you are.
I really hope the rumor isn't true and a coward like you wasn't really a colonel in our armed forces leading brave men of honor. That would have been a disgrace.
If your comment was an attempt at humor, I hope when I get old I don't become as unfunny as you, because I don't think anyone laughed.
Again, you know my name and even my last name. If there's something you need to say to me, I'm in the book. Grow a pair and say it in person.

ha ha, we all have one, I just feel sorry for kt's neices and nephews :)
don't get mad about what IT says.... It's probably the one that follows around 12 year old boys that's why he made the reference
just like homophobic people are usually just too scared to come out of the closet themselves

LOL!! Denial without credibility is folly.
For a while there, I just believed you actually thought you were being funny, but you actually start believing your own garbage and don't know where to stop. You obviously are a very disturbed individual. You have nothing to say, but you continue with your insinuations.
Once again, you have something to say? Be a man and say it.
Stoney_pe or should I say RAFAEL??
How do you know that KTOGP is a man?
We really do not know much about KT...
We know that he/she does not care for you very much.
We know that he/she does not care for topgunscooter or JOE or I guess pretty much most bloggers. Wait there was a nocommonsense and I believe one or two more that he or she tolerated.
We know that he/she is a stickler for grammar.
We know that he/she has a vast knowledge on a variety of subjects.
We know that he/she is a non smoker.
We know that he/she is at least in their late 60's.
We do not know if he/she is married--do we? Help us out if you know the answer!
We do not know if he/she has children--do we? Help us out if you know the answer!
We do know that he/she was in the 1956 Water Festival Ski Show. I would love to see some photos. If anyone knows of a link or a way to get photos during that time period, please respond. I would love to see KT in his/hers glory days!!!
But most of the people who know me don't even know my name is Rafael, but I am not hiding it. My mom will be really happy if people start calling me by the name she gave me, but I have been Stoney for so long, that I don't care either way, unless you're sending me a check, then you better make sure to write Rafael instead of Stoney.
As for KTOGP32, you are correct. All we really know is that he/she is a coward hiding behind his/her screen name. Now that I think about it, he/she makes lots of claims about lots of things he has done without any way for anyone to verify, probably all lies since he's so quick to accuse everyone else of lying. He/she is probably guilty of all the other things he/she accuses everyone else of doing. He/she must figure that if he/she can do it, everyone else must be doing it too. From now on since he/she demands it, maybe he/she needs to provide means for verification of all those claims he/she is constantly making.
Since you apparently made the blog po-po mad to get your stuff deleted. Sad, sad.
And what do you plan on doing with that rope?
Cookie? Is that part of the "grooming" process?
Stay away from me. Or keep following me around and we'll discuss more of the apparently less well-known aspects of your life.
Following you? Apparently it's the other way around since you seem to claim to have all this information about me, surely you wouldn’t know anything about me if you weren’t the one doing the following. I think you're still projecting.
You keep making threats but yet say nothing because you have nothing. You make insinuations because you think the appearance of impropriety is enough to mar someone’s reputation. You’re one of those people who resorts to attacking the person when you can’t beat his argument in hopes that he will concentrate more on defending himself from your unfounded accusations so you can claim a victory. You should really get into politics. You’ll fit right in. You keep hiding behind your screen name because you are indeed a coward. If you had anything at all, you would have spilled it by now so you can bask in the glory of having nailed some “evil doer”, and if you actually have something I wish you would spill it once and for all because I’ve always wanted to own a motorcycle like the one you claim to ride in the North Carolina mountains. I’ve always wanted to own a car that a little old man or lady drove because those are always very well taken care of. I’ve always wanted to own a house where an old person lived with all his possessions still in it because whenever I watch that Antiques Roadshow program on PBS, old people seem to have stuff that always fetches some good cash in the collector’s market. I will have to share some of it with my new attorney for certain, but I’ll be laughing all the way to the bank after he takes his share.
First you are inviting me out to dinner, then you want to take my motorcycle?
Where did you get the "old" stuff you are always harping on anyway? I'm only 68! You don't seem smart enough to make it that far, so maybe you'll never know how young it actually feels.
As far as anonymity goes, I'm pretty well known to the other bloggers here, the decent ones anyway. The initials K.T. have given it away to most.
Finally...you two are playing nice!
But I am still curious...teacher or colonel?
Male or female? Biker dude or biker babe?
So many questions and not enought time!
Do we have a photo of the water ski team...I would love for you to share it!!
I am one of the decent ones....Can I get a hint??
you side yo head. Or did you just fall off the turnip truck in Lobeco last night?
Perhaps your real name is Mary popped too many pills today.

You ain't no Sherlock. That's fo sure!
Anyone who can rub two sticks together and make a fire has figured out who is who here. Do your homework and quit expecting everyone else to bring you up to speed.
and yes!
Scooter, Stoneypeagravel and Zoolander will never lead anyone out of a cave.
or a blog.
Assnuts,
I couldn't agree with you more! Unlike you, most of the rest of us aren't dumb enough to be lost in a cave to begin with! Watch yer 6 dip$hit!
doing all that backpedaling?
I am here to share my opinion on issues that may affect our little community and to read what other people think, and maybe from time to time have civilized debate with some of them, if they're capable of it.
As far as finding out who you are, I never cared who anyone else is on here, unless someone starts personal attacks about me. Then, I will most definitely call him out on the carpet, because I have a pair and when I have something to say about someone, I will say it face to face, not in some blog under some alias.
I must have lost my alphabet/name decoder or missed that class in college, perhaps I'm just not as smart as you and the rest of the "decent" bloggers you speak of to be able to figure out who someone with a name as obvious as KTOGP32 is, maybe when I'm 68 years young I can be a decent smart blogger like you and all your pals and finally get it. Until then, I guess I’ll have to live an unfulfilled life not knowing who you are. It will be difficult, but hopefully I will manage.
68 isn’t old. 68 is just a number. My wife tells me I don’t act my age, She thinks I am 9 some times. It’s not the number on your age certificate but the way you act that determines how old you are.
P.S. If I couldn’t take your bike, I would settle for your car because I bet it has never been smoked in. That adds market value to a vehicle.
I'm sure it's composing its reply as we type. I haven't figured out who it is yet either. No great loss....if I did know, I might be tempted to go tell it off to its face, and that could get me in trouble.
Wow, for a second there, I thought you were actually having a civil conversation, until the crack about the car.
. . crapola. you guys have been going back and forth like a couple of geezers sitting in a chair at the home arguing over who was the better pitcher on the 1969 Mets. . . and the BG is sitting here paying for a server to archive this for posterity. In 2308 some college student is gonna do a study on the BG blogs from the early 20th century and probably get a doctorate wondering who all thes people were . . . . and WHY they spend all their time bloggin'
You're right Joe. The Beaufort Gazette shouldn't waste money achieving such nonsense. Instead they should spend their resources achieving important stuff like:
-Blogs about who the mayor of blog city and his officers should be.
-Blogs about when the next time the bloggers are getting together and all the follow up after the event.
-Blogs about a man who met a girl but she "forgot" to give him her number.
-Blogs about where to find a good landscaper or pool cleaner.
-Blogs about how the right way to paint aluminum.
-Blogs about how to beat the heat.
-Blogs about how odd it is that people in the South have manners.
I could go on, but I'm sure you get my point. Sorry to bore the self appointed mayor of blog city with our nonsense.
So, you sound a lot like KT...just without the same..."OH MY did he really just say that?" ...feeling that I am usually left thinking after reading something that KT wrote.
Well, actually that is what I am thinking right now! :)
....My wife tells me I don’t act my age, She thinks I am 9 some times.....
Smart lady! What's she doing with you?
.....I will most definitely call him out on the carpet, because I have a pair and when I have something to say about someone, I will say it face to face, not in some blog under some alias......
Occasionally, you can read something on the BG blog so funny there is a real danger of cracking ribs. Wimps thumping their chests with false bravado fall into that category.
Rafael, you have been thoroughly thrashed and discredited here in the written arena. Why would anyone believe it might work out any better for you face to face?
Occasionally, you can read something on the BG blog so funny there is a real danger of cracking ribs. Wimps thumping their chests with false bravado fall into that category...
I couldn't have said it better myself. That was the perfect description of a man who'll say anything under the cover of internet anonymity, and here I thought you were incapable of introspection.
I see now.....the "projecting" thing you accuse people of....you like to do that too?
And once in a while, if no one pays attention to her, she'll come and stand close to me, maybe even nudge me, until I acknowledge her by rubbing her head or something like that. I bet if she could type, she'd just post a blog comment and maybe keep reposting it over and over until she got some attention.
While your exchanges with KT..whoever are amusing, it frustrates me that you continue to acknowledge his/her attacks. The exchanges are certainly entertaining but how long will you continue this "battle of wits" with an unarmed opponent ? It hardly seems fair.
Do you remember in grade school when the way you demonstrated your "affection" for a little girl was to be mean to her ?
I think KT has a crush on you...watch your back (literally).
Certainly you can do better than trot out the old shopworn "battle of wits/unarmed" cliche. On the other hand, it may have been coined with Rafael in mind.
what is wrong with you?
and you were saying something about not wanting McCain. If you don't want McCain, that must mean you want the guy with zero experience in anything, who was absent or no vote for the majority of votes of any significance during his state senator days, who has spent over half his time in the US senate running for president, and the guy who sat in a church for over twenty years and couldn't figure out that the man who inspired him, mentored him, married him and his wife, baptized his children is a racist separatist nut case. Good call because he does have a nice slogan. You should run for beaufort City Coucil. Thay need more thinking like yours.
No I am not a moron or a bigot. I never said I wouldn't vote for somebody because of their name. I said anybody with that name would put a big question mark in my head.
McCain is a war hero and went through hell and back as a US POW.
What did bho do?? get elected senator in Illinois?? whoop-ti-doo.
He has big pretty teeth, yes, and a movie star voice, yes.
What else did he ever do that counted for something like Senator McCain did??
Once again, I know where McCain's loyalty is, Nobody really knows where bho's loyalty is.
It is single minded name calling fools like you that this country should really be scared of.
Grow up and quit calling people names and attempting to belittle them when you get mad on the playground.

Not that I disagree with your assertions about McCain. He was awarded a Silver Star, a Distinguished Flying Cross, 3 Bronze Stars, a couple of Purple Hearts, and numerous other medals and awards totaling 26 or 28.
But I have yet to be able to locate any of the official narratives that accompanied each of the medals and awards. Realizing he was a POW means that he probably received a medal for that. I believe that most POWs do. But the official narratives that described his actions for heroism and valour that merited the other awards and medals doesn't seem to be available.
I doubt that he would have received an award as a Silver Star for resisting interrogation.
Let me start by saying I am not an Obama supporter because of his policies; however, I don't believe he named himself. I think his mother did, so it is not his fault what his name is, unless you think he should have changed it.
First let me say everyone aboard the Forrestall was a Hero that day. We had to watch the video in my A school in the military to learn proper Fire Fighting procedures. After the initial explosion the deck fire fighting crew (Crash Crew) knocked the fire down with Foam that smothers the fire and depletes the O2 source.
Then other Sailors started to fight the fire (everyone aboard a Ship is a Fire Fighter during a disaster) with straight water and washed the foam away and the Fire reflashed. Everyone thought they were doing the right thing that day to save their lives. Just thought you would find this Intresting Blaze. Happy Fourth of July to Everyone ! Especially our Troops in harms way.
In the documentary it states that most of the fire fighting specialists were killed in the first series of explosions leaving the jist of the battle to other personnel - the sailors and officers did their best and many lost their lives in the effort...but they did save the ship and many other lives.
When the rocket hit McCain's aircraft, there were 2 F-4 Phantoms on the fantail immediately on the port side. CDR Dollarhide, my former Commanding Officer, a Lieutenant at that time, exited the front cockpit of his F-4 and fell to the ground, breaking his hip. The 1000 pound bomb went off, killing his RIO in the backseat. Lt Dollarhide's life was saved by the fall. The next F-4 to Lt Dollarhide's aircraft include another shipmate of mine, Lt Dodge and his pilot. Both ejected after the 1000 pounder went off and were picked up by the plane guard tailiing the ship.
The whole point of my bringing this up is that McCain's character demonstrates a far superior form of loyalty and leadership than the other candidate. Just for comparison, let's take John Kerry and Barack Obama, put them in a POW camp and after several months in captivity, or even a few days, tell either of them they could go home. Each would have jumped on that plane in a skinny minute. But the code of honor would have been violated because they are bound to remain with their fellow POW's until all are released, despite the hardship.
Obama's throwing his mother under the bus demonstrates this character flaw, as well as his remaining in Reverend Wright's America-hate-speech church for 20 years. Can you imagine his children's view of America growing up in a church like that? Additionally, it appears that he is not in control of his campaign. His proposal to change Washington appears to be a smoke screen since all of his close advisors are former Washington insiders.
John McCain will not embarrass our country. Obama will destroy it beyond repair.
Your comments are compelling, the Forrestall tragedy ranks among the worst disasters in the history of our military. Each and every member of that crew were true heroes without a doubt. They all gave every ounce of their souls to save their shipmates and themselves. Their bravery cannot be questioned! But, in those circumstances nobody has a real choice, you either give all you have, or you die! Such bravery is something to be honored by everyone, but it does not necessarily indicate high level leadership skills. It is also not a situation that happens to everyone, and therefore I don't believe that you can honestly say that someone who hasn't been exposed to such a situation would not act in the same courageous manner.
You also can't say that Obama would not have survived a POW camp. He fortunately never had the opportunity so we will never know. I also don't think that the gooks ever offered POWs a free pass from their imprisonment in return for information. The fact is that most POWs were in fact broken by their captors. Few if any gave up information of any importance, nor did most possess any such info. They were all brave and resisted to the best of their abilities before giving in as they had previously been instructed to do by their superiors. That's why things are done on a need to know basis.
I'm not taking anything away from McCain's courageous military experience, he is definitely a man to be very proud of. He's what real men are made of. He is not however a safe bet in the White House, and neither is Obama. But let's at least be fair in our comparisons. Bravery and leadership are not necessarily synonymous.
Given that Obama renounced his minister, whom he previously called his mentor, and given that he threw his mom under the bus in order to win this election, he would have squealed like a stuck pig in order to go home if he had been a POW.
Three POW's were sent home. All of the other POW's followed the honor code.
McCain remained as a POW to the end.
There is a military officer honor code that says."I will not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do." Obama could not execute that code, could he? He lied about accepting public financing for his campaign. He has already lied about ending the war immediately after becoming President. He cheated by accepting a loan on his house that was not exactly appropriate.
Let's not mince words here. The President of the United States must have high character. Obama demonstrated poor character by remaining in a hate-America church for 20 years. And he wants to be President? Someone who let his preacher say horrible things about America for 20 years and did not stand up to him? McCain stood up to his captors and was tortured as a result.
McCain did not disgrace America and he will not disgrace America. While I disagree with him on many issues...the choice to vote for him over Obama is pretty doggone easy.
From the posts on the Huffington Post, a liberal web site, some posters and bloggers are unhappy that he is now shifting his public campaign toward the center. His far left record was a plus for many liberals, but now they are being critical.
I suspect that his campaign staff is recommending that he does take a more centrist position as Bill Clinton did. But Bill Clinton was always a centrist which made him popular.
Obama's shift to the center should make all of us ponder the guy. He is a moving target. If he votes liberal but talks centrist, who is he and who will he be if he is elected?
My view is that he will remain a liberal. Some of his campaign speeches already emphasize using government to solve social challenges. He has already said on more than one occasion that he will tax those "evil" oil companies and give the money to the middle class. Taking the profits that should go to investors as dividends, but he would "give" it to the middle class who have not earned it. He has already said that he would reduce defense spending and use the tax money to fund social programs.
He may have dropped his minister, but his record shows that he votes liberal and has participated in social action groups around Chicago that follow the Marxist philosophy.
Sorry, Obama, but a lot of us will not fall for the shell game in talking centrist.
Yes Sir. There are some people awake down there. You are on the money as usual. Just this morning on TV (apparently FOX) they were remarking about the fact of which way BHO really went. Did he swing to the left to get the Primary vote and is really a acentrist? Or is he moving from the Left to gain the unaware voters. It aint Holloween; who is this guy? Just incase, I am "losing" all of my guns except when I really need them. Commie.
So you agree that these oil companies are not taking advantage of the situation and deserve these RECORD BREAKING PROFITS as well their investors. Perhaps I would be an investor but I cant afford it due to oil prices.
Yes most of the main Fire Fighters were taken out but watch the video and you will understand. First video on utube

If we looked at the entire US population considering all ages what are the percentages of active and retired military compared to civilians with no US Federal military service.
Do not include in the military number those who were in the military for less than the 20 years or eighteen or whatever needed for retirement pensions.
Thanks for any help with these percentages.
