The disasters of flooding and fires does show the differences in attitudes of people. Resourceful people will not only prepare themselves in case of disasters, but they will rebuild quickly.

The New Orleans people demonstrates the dependent attitude that people have learned since the government started its War on Hunger and War on Poverty in the 1960s. Now we have thousands of people that have learned to be dependent on the government. Katrina is a tragic reminder of just how helpless these people have become.

And yet the liberals want to not only continue this debacle, but they will add even more.

The programs should have been set up on a temporary basis, like workermans comp and unemployment compensation. If some people needed help on a temporary basis, they could apply for it on a temporary and limited program.

But they set it up so that many people now have made it a lifetime career of getting those checks. There is no limit as long as they can show low income.

How do they get by? some couples never get married, so one works and the spouse doesn't. That way one can show no income and get the check. But they still live together.

Another scenario is the underground economy. Some receive checks and show no income because they do work, but get paid in cash that is not reported. We've all witnessed someone in the supermarket line using the government card, but then pulling out a wad of cash to buy things not allowed on the card.

And yet the government has no investigations and no accountability. At least with the workman's comp and unemployment compensation cases, they do hire investigative officers to monitor for abuses.
