Senator expresses dismay with chief of state's prisons

..."The chairman of the Senate Finance Committee said Monday he wants to question the director of the state's prison system about spending at the agency, especially in light of two jury awards against agency officials totaling almost $1 million".

"Sen. Hugh Leatherman of Florence also said he was insulted that Jon Ozmint, the director of the state's prisons system, didn't appear at a recent meeting of the State Budget and Control Board at which his agency asked permission to run a $4 million deficit".

"Frankly, I think it was an affront to the Budget and Control Board for them to send a messenger over," Leatherman told reporters after a budget conference meeting".

"The federal jury awards came in cases in which former employees sued agency officials, alleging civil conspiracy".

"The latest award came two weeks ago in Lexington, when a jury there awarded a former administrator $350,000 against two top officials of the agency. Last year, a federal jury awarded a former warden $510,000 in a similar civil conspiracy case".

"Leatherman, a member of the five-member Budget and Control Board, said he has asked the prison system before for information about lawsuits and settlements but has not been given the details. "I'll get it at the next board meeting," he said".
