The smoking lamp is lit, smoke 'em if you got 'em

There has been some recent threads concerning smoking.......cigarette smoking. Didn't know if some have seen the recent commercials about becoming an EX...that is an EX smoker. Here's the website,
http://www.americanlegacy.org/default.aspx

Glad to see more organizations using counter-addiction methods to help with the nicotine habit. The old school approaches of: You need to quit, or smoking is bad, or those are coffin nails, never worked.
Smoking is a serious addiction which requires a medical/psychological program in conjunction with social support. If you smoke or care about someone who does then you might want to visit the site listed above.

Actually, the "old school" methods are more effective and more often used. "Cold turkey" is the quickest and longest lasting method of quitting, but it takes commitment and strength of character to go through the 2 weeks of hell required to get clean.

My Dad was a heavy smoker, started at age 15...prob smoked 3-4 packs a day. When he started having heart issues, the surgeon pointed to the pack of cigarettes in his pocket and told him he could help him, but if he was going to continue smoking, not to to bother to come back...wasn't going to waste his time on a dead man. My Dad took the cigarettes out of his pocket and dropped them in the trash can right then, never smoked again.

My doctor really got my attention during an annual physical. We were talking about my declining health and he brought up smoking. I told him of my unsuccessful attempts to quit. He simply replied "one day you will certainly stop smoking", meaning that dead men don't need lighters. Good for your dad to quit when he did. Cold turkey is no doubt the most common way people quit but we need to do more about the "why" you need to quit as well as the "how".
btw I managed to quit smoking and lose 55 lbs at the same time. Prayer is powerful stuff. I find that nagging never works when spurning someone to action so no need to be rude or harang folks who choose to light up. But if we can plant the seed of desire for them to stop it just may blossum.

Even planting the seed will not work. People who smoke all carry that seed already, and it will only grow whne they individually decide to allow it. Goading, harassing, and even encouraging people to quit will backfire in most cases. It is belittling to hear such things, and most adults don't care to be told what they should or should not do so they will rail against such demands. People who insist upon constantly reminding smokers of their "wrongdoing" are accomplishing nothing other than feeding their own egos. And, most poeple who complain about smoking were once among the worst offenders. In many cases these people speak out simply because they are still addicted (even though they have quit) and do not have the will power to avoid smoking if exposed to it. If you have quit or never smoked, good for you and I'm glad you're life is going the way you want it too. But, please keep your opinions about my choices or those of others to yourself. And, please stop trying to take over gathering places (where people go who share each other's views but not yours), you aren't going to support those places after you ruin them, you just want a shallow victory. The sort of behavior I'm speaking of serves to do nothing other than make the provocateur look like a jerk in the eyes of others. I'd rather be a stinky smoker than an a$$hole!

They are synonymous.

You would be the expert!

We wear airpacks to keep the smoke which is POISON out of our lungs. Now then we also do not allow our personnel to smoke anywhere in or near the Station. I would like to see a No Smoker Hiring Practice. Do you ever get sick of paying taxes to help assist those poor B******s who die every day at our expense because they "need" to gas themselves and others? Maybe we could use them folks for kind of a scientific study to smell smoke in burning buildings and tell us to what area needs to be hosed down, they could be the real hero. That is if they have any olfactory capabilities left...Maybe we could have a financial responsibility insurance policy required for all smokers like yall have for them thousands of drunk drivers in South Carolina. How about MOTHERS Against Smokers?

Freddie, you should pay more attention. All those tobacco companies class action suits the government went on made them pay gazillions for health care and there are plenty of taxes collected from tobacco just for that purpose, but your elected government spent that money on something else.

I thought you were perfect which would mean that you have never smoked. So how would you know anything about this?

2 years ago. I told everyone for years I was going to stop at a certain time, and trust me, the cravings were not worth listening to my Ma gripe! I did it without anything at first... then the 3rd day I hit one of those nicotine inhalers (WOW) I never switched cartriges, I used the same one for another 3 days and at the end of that I was good.
I don't like people to smoke now in my face. As far as if I am at a bar and others smoke, I don't have that big of a problem, but I don't let smoke in my room and I choose not to work where there is going to be heavy smoke.
I can't imagine fitting ciggs into my budget now, I don't know how I ever did. I notice how people smell when they walk by too... That's why there is no smoking in my room with my clothes :)
I am not sure if I could have done it cold turkey, but I have seen friends and family quit CT and it's worked for them. If you are trying to quit, I think you have to really want to, or it won't work. I think business owners should be able to choose if their businesses are non smoking establishments. I think what the county has done is stupid and an abuse of power. You protest a business policy by not going.I remember plenty of people leaving resturants because people at my table were smoking after our meal. That's how you get a point accross.
A government building is different because it's not something you really have a choice in. I remember when there was smoking in the police station (I never thought that was a bad idea considering I typically feel I need a cigg when I have to go there) I do understand now not every officer/ victim/ witness smokes. Not every patron at a bar smokes, but there were bars that didn't allow it before the ban so people could have gone there.

I started smoking when I was 14. I'm now over 30. I never smoked in the house or around my child. I tried multiple things to quit...Nothing really worked until my toddler held a straw to her mouth and said, "I mokin." That's when I got an appointment with my doctor and got onto Chantix and I would recommend it to anyone who's doctor says it's ok.

I'm breathing a BIG sigh of relief.
