Feeling a little exposed

If you've watched some of my recent videos, like this one about Sen. Lindsey Graham visiting Beaufort, you've probably noticed that folks are looking a little washed out. That's partially my fault and partially the sun's fault.
It seems that people around here like to stand with a light to their backs. That's fine, unless they're being filmed. Anyway, I've been playing around with my camera and things should be getting better.

Is your camera equipped to accept lens filters?
Backlighting is a problem. I set my camera to manual and use the ground at their feet to set the exposure. It overexposes everything else, but at least the subject is better. Some cameras like my Canon Rebel have an automatic flash fill that also can help.
I always put my exposures in Paintshop Pro and it has a feature called Flash fill that will brighten the subject and darken the borders automatically. I am sure the other good programs have similar features.
All of my stuff is amateur and for my family and my enjoyment.
