Flowers or...?
My mom doesn't like flowers. Well, she likes them, but she doesn't want anyone to buy them for her. My dad says he got her roses once and she told him never to do it again because he could use the money for something better.
I inherited my mother's disdain for flowers. I think they're pretty and I appreciate the sentiment, but they seem like the easy way out. I prefer something a little more practical or a little more original. Example: shortly before a move, my best friend got me a "worry doll." You're supposed to whisper you worries to it, put it under your pillow and the worries will be gone in the morning.
With Mother's Day this weekend, I'm not looking to discourage anyone from getting Mom a bouquet. After all, it is one of the busiest days for florists. But, what other things have you gotten your mom or other special person in your life?

Your father never bought her flowers again? They're still married??
Either he or she is a saint. Only you know which is which.
My Mom likes flowers, but not cut ones. I've gotten her flowers to plant in her garden in past years. My Dad bought her a rose bush. This year she's getting an Italian charm bracelet with some charms that are personal for her. Grandkids making handmade gifts always goes over well with Grandma. Breakfast in bed, a day off from all housework, spa day, etc.
Since when did Mother's Day revolve around nothing but flowers and candy? Whatever happened to just spending time together, or simply just saying "I love you". Every year I go to my moms and we sit down and talk and just spend quality time together. Dont see the reason for flowers and gifts really.
Blame it on Hallmark! They make a holiday out of everything! "Congratulations! You're baby is potty trained!" "I'm sorry...I got mad and bashed out the headlights of your 2008 Mustang with a Louisville Slugger."
This is so true! Damn you Hallmark! And they certainly do make a holiday for EVERYTHING!
would be to treat mom to dinner out or prepare dinner for her, and take it to her. I am a mom, and my family usually treats me to dinner at a restaurant of my choice. To me, that is special because I don't have to cook and I get to spend time with my family.
Flowers you can enjoy year after year...I like that.
