What's your commenting style?

A while back, I read a great article on Slate about internet commentary. Michael Agger, the author, looked at the types of comments left on a laughing baby video. You'd think that there wouldn't be a lot of variety since the video is, literally, of a baby laughing. But it turns out that, given anonymity, people can be jerks about anything.

Not that I've noticed it on this site, but I have seen some pretty lame comments in my surfing of the web. My question is, why be a jerk?

I've never seen the appeal of being an internet meany. I try to comment in the same way I interact with a group of strangers in real life...polite, but a little sarcastic.

What about you? Does your commenting style match your real life personality? Or do you take on a cyber alter ego?

Comments

The internet lets people speak with anonimity and say things that they normally would not say without repercussion. Those are they people who often say mean things. That's why people don't use their real name on here, so they can just say anything and remain anonymous. If I have something to say, I'll say it, unless my wife manages to put her hand over my mouth before it comes out.

Funny, I didn't see it. I figure everyone can fill in the OFFICIAL BG TOS Deletion of Potentially Expletive Abbreviation.

Meg, I personally have two styles of commenting, verbal and written. I usually try to do one or the other and not both unless you count talking to yourself while typing both. Sarcasim? Sometimes, humor often, but I only get mean when I don't like the way someone else is treating someone rather than the comments they are voicing.

I'm me, regardless of whether I am face to face with folks or here in blogland. Much like the previous poster who spoke of his wife's hand over his mouth. I have 4 ex wives mainly due to the fact that they weren't quick enough to shut me up,lol. I blog without anonymity, everyone here knows who I am. I like it that way, I firmly believe that one should never say anything about someone that they would not say to them. I can be very opinionated but will accept the responsibility for my words, actions, and deeds.

I love blogging and can find it quite addictive...lately, my wedding ring's beginning to spin as my fingers are getting a good work out...I like the cloak of not being known...but appreciate those, such as yourself and Mr. Farrell, who are willing to put themselves out there in the flesh...well... as fleshy as a computer screen will allow y'all to be!

I basically type as I would talk...trying to convey emotions as needed, but not required.

The bad thing is you got spelling errors when you type. I have a great vocab, but grew up in an age of spell check so I don't care..
I am probably a tad nicer on here than I am in real life... and I don't curse on here :P though sometimes it's hard.
As for my blogging style, I try to be helpful when I can.. And naturally, I joke around with others I know on here... fun question, thanks!

Isn't it funny how you can build a rapport with people on a blog?

that you can not only build a rapport, but get to "know" someone...you get to know the buttons that you can push to get them going...some people "argue"...you are basically arguing with your computer monitor, but your blood pressure rises...it's hilarious!

One problem I see is that it's hard to tell when one is joking, being sarcastic or is seriously up in arms about something. Tone of voice is lost in the written, or typed, word. For the most part I write the same way I talk. I also have a tendency to be a bit sarcastic so typing gives me a chance to "think before I speak". I'm also a little slow at comebacks when verbally arguing so the delay with typing gives me a chance to think of something good to come back with.

my problem has always been bieng too quick with the come backs... I am scarcastic all the time, most people take me seriously (I don't know why) I think, typing on here, that I am less scarcastic, but we all have our moods
