Voters Registration

About a week before the SC primary in January, I decided that I should go down and register to vote. I knew that I wouldnt be able to vote in either of our primaries because I waited too long to register. Like I said, I registered in EARLY January, as in just about the first week or so. I JUST got my card in the mail today. I was told it would take 2-4 weeks to get my card. Here it is about 9 weeks later and it comes in. I would have gone down there to complian, but I honestly do not have the time. I work up to 15 hours a day at two jobs and I need the rest of my day to sleep, just to wake up and do it again. I'm not too impressed with our county workers.

Cause you don't sound like it. If not, how long have you lived here? It took me one trip to the county courthouse back in 2000 to figure out that everything moves at a slower pace here. I'm learning to live with it. I guess it adds to the lowcountry charm, but it sometimes can be annoying. I am developing the tactic of applying for everything approximately two months before I know I will need it. So far, it's working, and it saves me the headache of getting angry about it.

I am infact a local. Born and raised here and I love it! I didnt go to the courthouse though, I went to the smaller office off of Burton Hill Road. I guess that might be why it took so long?

No, they closed up the Voter Registration office at our Government Center on Ribaut Road and moved the whole operation to Burton Hill a couple years ago. Makes it kind of difficult for all those new residents of Lady's Island to travel that far to register, doesn't it?

Also, I believe our County Administrator's office has moved to Burton Hill as well.

Joestepp, I try to only get upset over stuff that matters. Whats the point? Was there an election you missed? I'm sure you were actually registered to vote the day you signed up [with the statutory delay] - a card does not make you a voter - its just another piece of government paper not worth the paper its printed on - since what matters is the name in the registrar;s book, not some document you can gin up yourself on a computer using Jose Jalapeno's name.

It does matter. It may sound stupid, but I'm only 19 and a lot of people my age arent even registered. I was proud of myself for putting myself out there and registering my "voice" if you will. And the fact that my card took double the time go get here killed my excitement. True I didnt miss any election or anything, but thats not the point. Suppose it was a passport or something and I ended up not being able to make it to a family reunion outside of the country or something like that? I would be screwed.

and you DIDN'T miss anything. and yes it does "sound stupid".

You sure do love to wear the victim hat.

You don't really comprehend screwed, JS. Not yet, at least. Let me give you some examples

Not having ANY voice whatsoever in who leads your nation;

Not having any voice in who your health care provider is;

Not getting an appointment with you health care provider until it's too late;

Being thrown into a windowless cell without the right to proper legal counsel;

Being thrown into that windowless cell for merely reading a tattered and torn page from Paul's Epistle to the Romans;

Being executed for losing a soccer game;

Need I go on? Nah. I think you get my drift.

Missing a family reunion is not "being screwed". Getting your voter registration a couple days later than you had hoped is not "being screwed".

And I am having a hard time figuring out why you could not pick up your voter registration while you were there. Have they changed procedure? I got mine when I first moved back to Beaufort the day I walked into the VR office. And when I moved within the county, I left my old and walked out with my new within 15 minutes.

Because I never had an old one. This is my first one. I had to fill out a form, drop it off, and then wait for the card in the mail. I registered around the 7th of january, I cant give you an exact date. But I'm just now getting my card. Its not really that big of a deal being that I didnt actually miss anything. But what if your waitor told you that your food would be ready in five minutes, and twenty minutes later you got it? You would want to know why it took so long.

Nope. I wouldn't even ask. I just would not leave a tip and probably would not eat there again. And I would not feel "screwed"...just educated.

You can also apply for an absentee ballot.

These have been available forever.

Call the Voter Registration dept. Who? the Voter Registration dept. will mail you an application for an absentee. Who? The folks who run our elections.

If you feel disenfranchised (screwed) you have only yourself to blame. How can you register to vote (you are registered, right?) and not understand about balloting and voting?

Call your Voter Registration Dept. The number is in your blue pages, and also at www.BCGOV.net, click departments, go to Voter ...

You will have to actually do some work for your vote. I will not hand it to you.

And you can actually complain by telephone. You dont' have to get in your car and drive.

If you want to vote, the county isn't going to adjust its hours to accommodate you. We got tens of thousands of voters here.

If you don't make an effort, you got no 'scuse to complain.

Excuse me? Whats all this about. I dont need to know how to vote absentee. If you could go back and re-read what I typed you will see that I wasnt able to vote because of the date that I registered. You have to register something like 30 days before an election. And I never said anything about not knowing about balloting or voting...I'm not sure what you were trying to get at here. And you say that if I dont make an effort, then I have no excuse to complain? My effort was supposed to be done when I handed them my registration. From then on it was in their hands, and it took them 2 months to get me a voters registration card!
