Silly season arrives, or is it turkey?
The silly season arrived early this in the S.C. General Assembly or maybe it was the wild turkey season, which officially arrives on March 15,
Several Upstate House members took umbrage at a call by S.C. High School League referees, which disallowed a tremendous three-quarters court shot at the buzzer in a 50-48 loss by Spartanburg High School to Summerville High.
Quick-draw Rep. Harold Mitchell, D-Spartanburg, rolled into Columbia on Tuesday and filed a bill that would require league officials to use television replays to decide close plays at high school basketball and football playoff games.
Mitchell told The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg, “Those kids played their hearts out only to have human error steal it away from them. We want to make sure neither our high school, nor any other high school has to go through anything like this again.”
Well, Mitchell and peers in the legislature should be paying more attention to the $7 billion state budget and the potential 2.5 percent across-the-board cuts instead of the rules of high school basketball games.
The kids might have played their hearts out, but it is just a game. Lawmakers are dealing with issues that could mean life and death or a better and longer life through health insurance and funding for road maintenance.
No one likes to lose, but it is one of the life lessons that sports teach.
