Lotus Chinese Restaurant appears to have closed

What is it with Beaufort Plaza and recent restaurant failure?

Just more than three months after Checkers closed, its next-door neighbor has also apparently shut without notice. The locked doors at Lotus Chinese Restaurant at 3 Robert Smalls Parkway left several potential lunchtime patrons wondering where to go next when I stopped by today.

A spokeswoman for Checkers said the hamburger franchise suffered from a decline in business and unfavorable lease terms. I don’t know what the rent rates are at the shopping complex, but would think the location is prime real estate for any restaurant.

What else is going on?

  • Rent-A-Center is moving into half of the building at 245 Robert Smalls Parkway in Beaufort. The business is expected to open in about three months. The other side of the duplex, comprising about 5,000 square feet of space, is available for lease. A Catholic Charities thrift store has moved into the building next door at 241 Robert Smalls Parkway.

  • Jane Holseberg has opened Paws Pets at 1406 Paris Ave. in Port Royal. The business offers pet photography, animal day care, and grooming and bathing services.

  • Samantha Shirley has opened a tanning salon on Lady’s Island. Carolina Sun is at 102 Sea Island Parkway, Suite R.

I'm surprised it took this long. Since Shoney's closed, that location has been re-opened three times under three different names (all Chinese/Japanese buffet-type restaurants). I still wonder, though, if the ownership has been the same all along and only the name has changed?!

One was American food, with hamburgers and stuff, one was Mi Tierra which was mexican. Lotus is the first buffet there since Shoney's.

Since Shoney's closed it's been Mi Tiera, La Sol De Luna (also Mexican), Hometown USA (meatloaf and horrible foods), King Buffet (with all you can eat crablegs, pizza, and Chinese), and it seems like it had another name before Lotus.
It's a great location, it's hard to understand WHY no one can keep a business there, but for some reason no one can.

You're right, there were more than three. There were three different Chinese buffet restaurants there, though, because we ate at all of them. I can't remember the name of the other one, though. I'd forgotten all about Mi Tierra's and USA, maybe cause they weren't there all that long. We did eat at USA once, I think I blocked it out. We had two drunk people next to us, one of whom was actually hitting on my 11 year old daughter! UGH! Can't believe I completely forgot about it until someone mentioned the name.

Will someone please bring back the Village Inn??

That was one of the best, if not THE best, family restaurants ever in Beaufort.

Locally owned, locally operated, great food!

I dunno, but they only charged like $9 a person, and while their sushi looked kind of sketchy when they had it - you get 4 or 5 guys in there after golf, doing a little fried rice and mongolian bbq and they were not making any money.

This is one problem with the growth of Beaufort. Most land is held by a few families, and with the growth that Beaufort is going through, a new business is going to have a very hard time becoming established with the lease rates that are available.

I have worked for more than a few businesses that have folded up and left the Beaufort Plaza due to high rent.
