A jail instead of Walmart

Since the county needs another site for additional jail space, how about putting it on Lady's Island instead of a Walmart? Good employment opportunities for the island economy and very little traffic impact. They could leave a vegetative barrier on the property lines to give the impression that it is still a wooded area for the wildlife.

Of course they might not need the whole 25 acres, but it would leave room for some small businesses. Call it the Jailhouse Mall. Catchy name!! Ought to create some incentive for shoppers.

They could even put in a motel and call it the Jailhouse Motel. What a novelty!. People visiting the PI graduations could brag that they stayed in the Jailhouse Motel. Not many people can say that. They could place the large windows overlooking a pool with the jail in the background. Might even have tourists flocking there just so they could take pictures of them with the jail or the mall sign in the background. Something to remember. It could even be featured on the Travel Channel.

We have to think out of the box, not the "big box".

Very funny, lol. Although I have to disagree on the traffic issue. There would be lots of traffic coming from Burton area and St. Helena. But only during visiting hours, of course!

Or stagger visiting hours.
In a way, it would still be an "area for the wildlife", just not as wooded. And the Bft Co sheriff's deputies patrolling on St. Helena would not have to travel as far with detainees, which would allow them to get back to patrol more quickly, and hopefully catch more of those criminals they keep talking about on that other thread. And, a jail would not contribute to criminal activity in the area, as they say Walmart will. This is sounding better and better.

they should make it eco friendly :)
make it cost less money and enviormental damage

Eco friendly, of course. Costs less? Maybe do-able, but this is Beaufort County we're talking about. Can they actually build something that will not cost the county or its taxpayers a bunch of money?
Here's my idea-since the dump is in such close proximity to the site, put the "residents" of the jail to work at the dump. Have them help with sorting items for recycling, hand-picking through the items that get thrown into general household trash to find recyclables. Oh wait a minute, that won't work, they might find things that could be used as weapons. Okay, I got a little carried away, sorry!

not a problem, they just do searches before they let them in.. They should do that anyways after they work on the horses.
I think that's a great idea. The county needs a better recycling plan than what they have now.. None of the resturants or bars recycle beacuse it's too much hassle with the county.
Also i hope to see soon a shared compost, maybe the county maybe not... I would like to see the yard waste not go into a landfil

Personally, I'd put the jail out on Fripp - keeps the visitors to a minimum and also provides very few opportunities for escape! If not Fripp, then St. Helena, put the jail where the criminals come from. Cut down the transport costs. Then maybe we can get Penn Center to offer their design and input on the jail itself. Then we can deed it to them in 20 years and they can run it then!

Let's turn Fripp into a mini-Alcatraz!! The property owners there might not appreciate it, but most of them don't live there full-time anyway.
Having Penn Center run the jail is kinda like putting a bank robber on security detail at the local BB&T. Hey, where did all the prisoners go???
