As many of you know I wrote Wednesday's story about the anti-abortion signs that were seen around Beaufort County this week.
I believe the story was fair and showed both sides of the issue.
Unfortunately, I didn't get to speak with a representative from the group responsible for the signs until very late in the evening, and while I was able to include some of his comments, I couldn't research some of the things he told me.
I would like to share some more of what he said here on the blogs and get your reaction.
The quote I included from Mr. McCoy states that there were a "contingent of people not accustomed to seeing" the signs.
That's apparently because the signs and those groups of protesters haven't shown up in Beaufort County for at least six years.
Mr. McCoy said there used to be two "abortion mills" in Beaufort County. He referred to the Planned Parenthood that used to be on Lady's Island as an "abortion mill"
That statement begged a question that I didn't ask: "If the signs stopped showing up once the 'abortion mills' were shut down, then why now?"
Kathy Hulbert, director at Sea Island Presbyterian Day School on Lady’s Island, who I quoted in today's story, said she remembered seeing the signs years ago and was surprised to see them again this week.
"It’s a difficult matter to explain to a 3- or 4-year old," she said. "It’s not the kind of thing you want to start your morning out with."
McCoy said he acknowledged that parents would have a problem with their young children seeing the images, even saying it's the group's "biggest concern."
But he was steadfast in his belief that children need to see the images as much as anyone else. He said he showed the images to his 6-year-old granddaughter to teach her about abortion.
When asked why he didn't give others the same right to decide whether they wanted to show their children the images that he was afforded, McCoy again said that they're images that need to be seen.
The first call I took Tuesday morning regarding the anti-abortion signs included an interesting question from the caller.
"Have you ever seen anything like this?" she asked me, with true exasperation in her voice.
I told her I had, after all, I am from New York City, and what don't you see there.
But I've been living in South Carolina for almost 7 years now, and I know when something doesn't fit in locally.
Whether I agree with the signs or not, I knew immediately that their presence would create a rift in the community, which is why I wrote about it.
I hope the additional information I provided fosters open, respectful conversation, and not hate.

What's hard to reconcile, for me, is this statement: "According to Columbia Christians for Life's Web site, the group is a "witness for the Lord Jesus Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit, through establishing a faithful and compassionate Christian presence at the child-killing centers."
First of all, we have no "child-killing centers" here anymore, right? And even if we DID have an abortion clinic, and the protesters were standing outside it, how do those signs represent a "faithful and compassionate Christian presence"? They don't. They're accusatory and vile. This is not the way Christ operated. It's not the way he wants his followers to operate.
As to your unasked question "Why now?" all you have to do is read the signs that say "Hillary's Holocaust" to figure it out. It's primary time! That's 'why now.'
We have 4 kids of our own with a nephew who has 4 brothers living with us. Thus when they ask how come you vote republican? Other than economics I simply have to explain that democrats average fewer than 2 children per couple. If your mother and I were average democrats.......4 out of 5 of you would not be here. Nothing religious about that, its a simple fact. Guess what party they tell their frends they are, and why.
Well I just wanted to thank you for ruining my dislike of Hillary. If the lunatic fringe of the Pro-Life are out displaying these images for any children to see regardless of what thier parents feel, then I think I'll vote for Hillary just to screw you. Taking away choices,, like when your 5 year old sees a dead fetus for the first time, is wrong no matter what. Wait until the Government takes away your choice to have children, travel, be educated, practice your own religion and love the person you want to and I bet dead fetus pictures will be the last thing you'd be protesting on the roadside. BTW, China, Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia and about 40 other countries have the death penalty for the crimes I listed above. Stay at home, have as many kids as you want, make them watch Wife Swap but butt out of our lives, we have a handle on it and our kids will grow up with respect, values and tolerance. While yours are out buying giant poster boards.
i wonder what Mr McCoy would think if i decided his grandaughter should see two men kissing and holding hands or a gay couple lounging at home with their child or say pictures of the children and adults being killed in other countries by genocide. or pictures of drug addicts shooting up heroin. or pictures of executions. or slaughtered animals. or deformed humans due to chemical warfare. trying to hit all the causes i can. not being hateful just wondering if he believes that it is ok to show his grandaughter all the true atrocities (as some believe) there are in this world.
Did I really read this right Ian? This man admitted that he subjects a child to extreamely graphic images as a teaching tool against abortion? At 6 I would think that this subject should not be brought to their attention at all. Red Flag!!!
Do six year old children NEED to be talked to about abortion?????
It should really be a non-issue for first-graders beyond MAYBE a simple textbook definition.... (for example, if the child heard the word on tv and asked what it meant.)
If the groups' goal is to SAVE children, perhaps they should also ALLOW them to BE children, and not trouble them with adult issues.
We actually discussed that point at length.
As for the question that begged to be asked, I of course understand that this all is resurfacing because of the presidential race. But still, I should have asked the question.

Hey Ian, good follow up - but I got to tell ya' as with others, it raised an immediate red flag with me - so Okay - you are going to expose your little grandkid to this for educational purposes -but before grandkid was exposed to this - wonder if grandkid was EXPOSED to where and how babies are created in the first place! this reeks of "sick" in a BAD way...

Probably because of the late hour of your call last night, and although I believe your effort to report on this matter to be mostly "fair and balanced," it appears to me there is one point about what you remember me saying that needs some clarification. I may have miscommunicated what I said about my granddaughter's first encounter with these signs, but never did I deliberately force her to view these pictures. Nor is it now, while trying to convey the magnitude of this gruesome act to adults, do we deliberately target children. If you will read my additional comments to your original piece you should get the picture of that event.
Also, regarding the question you didn't ask concerning the-"why now" have the signs returned, and as I continue to try to emphasize, it is primarily about HILARY and the 2008 election.

So, abortion is secondary and graphic images forced on children is further down the list.
It seems very obvious that this is all about politics, "dirty politics".
Someone on a related thread on BG pointed out that these five foot images were of very late stage abortions, which I understand to be illegal anyway. It seems that Mr. McCoy has pushed the abortion political hot-buttons, however we at least know what the real issue is, it's politics.

With all due respect, Mr. McCoy (not that I believe you are deserving of any), by displaying these images (blown up to gigantic proportion) on heavily traveled roadways, you are most definitely targeting every single innocent child that is exposed to them. Your attempt to justify this disgusting behavior is laughable. You could easily target Hilary and the 2008 election without these displays.

Mr. McCoy has his priorities backwards, he is putting "HILARY and 2008 election" above all else. How's that for a "number one" priority?
What is also pathetic, is even after all the grief that they have received in Beaufort, they are on their way to another community to spread the word of "HILARY and 2008 election". As a matter of fact, they have a whole tour planned. "Hillary's Hollocaust", coming to a community near you!
I know that the 2008 election is so blinding and all, it's so blinding in fact that's it's causing people to stand at busy intersections for days on end with big gruesome posters, and the then repeat the process all over the state.
And what is equally pathetic is that McCoy is not the least bit concerned about the impact he has had on the community, i.e women, children, parents, etc... Is he concerned that he is upsetting the majority? What is also interesting is that he is pissing off people on both sides of the abortion issue, what a fool. His thought process is more like how can we get to the next street corner and flash somebody.
Wonder if we could find out where they are headed next? We could call or write or even blog the local paper there and give them a warning. Maybe if we had known ahead of time, some of this would have been avoided. I would have run over the posters early on, before they made it to my side of town. LOL
Wonder if he feels the same when he reads stories like the one today in the state news where the 18 year old reports baby not breathing, baby goes to hospital, dies, they found that it was stepped on, choked, etc. ,etc. Is that what you would prefer McCoy? Let it be born & hated or not cared for? Don't get me wrong, I'm not for abortion, but this poor child probably suffered from the date of birth.

I have a friend in Sumter, who has contacts in Columbia, Charleston, Orangeburg, Anderson, Greenville and Spartanburg. Maybe word can be sent out ahead of them, so that they can't do the damage to the children there that they accomplished here.

Well if the primary focus of the protest was/is Hillary Clinton, why not get a picture of HER and blow it up? There are much better ways to get your point across. I wouldn't have cared at all if the group would have held signs up that were not offensive, do what you want. But that might be the problem, no one would have taken a good look or been so concerned if not for the vile pictures. I refuse to let this upset me anymore, I have talked to everyone I can to get some answers about why these people were allowed to show these pictures. Now that you have seen how these pictures have affected small children in this community will you not come back here? Will you please choose pictures that will not give children nightmares to "convey the magnitude of this grusome act to adults"? Please?

HILLARY'S HOLLOCAUST - first response letter

Because of the Gazette's coverage, and my personal involvement with this event, I believe it necessary for me to first elaborate somewhat regarding the primary focus of what this particular tour was really all about - HILLARY CLINTON! The uproar over viewing of the graphic signs by children, albeit very important as well, remains a secondary issue with us. Although I will make an effort to address that problem later, I hope it will not become the central focus. We in America may well deserve a HILLARY for our failure to end the holocaust of abortion. And now with the potential of her getting back into the White House, the blood of our babies could likely flow even faster than it has under the past couple of administrations. I was informed yesterday that she was in NH proclaiming to be more "pro-choice" than OBAMA, duh! if true, and I have no doubt it is, along with her her often quoted positions regarding this matter, shouldn't that reveal her true colors concerning aborticide?
Being most aware of the hardships in explaining this to children, I will only say this for now: I believe they are God's little spies. At that tender age they are also not yet polluted with the human opinions of man and can easily spot fraud when someone attempts to snow them on such a significant matter concerning simple right and wrong. If I were on the side of the pro-aborts, I wouldn't want to try and explain my approval of that position either. They could learn a great deal from the "shock" of these children. For those parents who are truly wrestling with how to deal with the pictures, I've been there. Some 12 years ago while in the company of my granddaughter and traveling past a now closed abortion mill that was at the corner of 802 and Rue Dubois Rd on Lady's Island, I too was confronted with having to choose if and how I was going to explain one of these sign displays. After doing so, my granddaughter, who was experiencing obvious displeasure in seeing these signs responded by saying: GRANDPA -THAT IS WRONG! It is not easy, but if by chance you are a professing Christian, and want to follow Christ, as required by Eph 5:11, just do it! We are faced with the blood of almost 50 million babies on our hands in this country, and this abomination will not end until it is exposed for what it is, and the Church of Jesus Christ says it must end.
And we certainly don't need Hillary and her ilk (another abortion mill) back in Beaufort.

You are correct that this is a tough subject to discuss with a child but I would like for you to please explain what you mean by "God's little spies"? My older children are reading this and would like to know just how your signs are NOT polluting them.
I would like to make this as nice as possible. We as a nation already have blood in one form or another on our hands. Many of us around here take a bit more precaution when dealing with the "tough issues" around our children. The kids around here see and feel the blood enough already. " The sound you hear is..." usually tears when a parent or loved one leaves to go fight for your right to picket anyway. So do us a favor... just remove the graphic images and continue with your protest. Leave the explaining choices to us.... the parents. I feel that I should CHOSE when this should come up and not because you have forced me too.

I sense the heart of your struggle. Before I address your inquiry about God's little spies, first please allow me to say that this tour and our expose' effort regarding HILLARY and her political aspirations, coupled with her position on aborticide, is NOT about "my right" to protest. It is about a war that is being perpetrated in the womb of mothers and battled on the streets of our nation for the lives of babies who are systematically butchered by money grubb'n pro-abort enemies of life. If HILLARY is elected, it would only hasten America's degenerate slide of calling evil good and good evil! It is the reality depicted in these graphic pictures that causes us to rise up, so we would be out there with these signs, regardless of our "rights." They would have saved a lot of Jews from Hitler's death camps, more blacks from slavery and probably prevented many other atrocities of man's inhumanity on man, if more graphic truth about what these evils really portray had they been presented in times past. It is deeply troubling to me that this war had to go to the streets of America, but when cowardly unrighteous civil government will not perform its first responsibility - to protect life - then to the streets the war went. This of course only exacerbates the damage to the hearts and minds of our children. Like all wars though, they don't just go away, nor can we merely hide dead baby bones in a closet. To often we talk with our children about our position on the ills of war or some other gross evil until we are blue in the face, but unfortunately,it seems until they have actually lived or seen it, for some reason the tendency will be, at least in some degree, to dismiss it. And many of us know the results of where that shallow depth of reality leads. By then of course, it is to late. In many cases the graphic signs we show will not allow that to happen, unless of course one decides to start lying to himself. That is why these signs create such a furor. And yes, we know people will hate us for what we are doing, but sir, it is not about us! I can attest to you that most of the street pro-life activists people I know, none are on some kind of ego trip nor do we get paid to do this. It is about the truth of child murder and what it produces-death! The signs are most effective, and the enemies of good know it. And yes, they do produce heart and mind changes in people. I have personally witnessed this time and again. It sure changed mine on where I was with this issue before I saw them. I further have learned there is something else to remember when trying to discuss this issue with our children; call it what it is and never try to sugar coat it with confusing words such as "medical care" or "health care." I would suggest that one never tries to inject that kind of psycho-babble into any discussion with children. They see right through it, and I personally believe they full well know it is cold blooded MURDER. This is where God's little spies come in. From their perspective, and after viewing these horrible pictures they can become His agents of truth. Like when my own granddaughter, who's little mind had not yet been polluted with man's "wisdom," after having to view this horror, and maybe even somehow experiencing some of the pain associated with the children in these pictures, said to me, "GRANDPA, abortion is wrong!" I didn't really have to teach her anything about the issue. God says He has written His laws on our hearts, maybe even before we were born, I don't know. But at any rate, she was right and He used her to actually teach me about His Laws. When we want to remove children from our so called "adult" conversation or the troubles of life, we may very well be removing God's agents of truth, who can be instrumental in exposing our polluted thinking, humble us, and route out any hypocrisy. Sure worked for me. I also did not have to wrestle with my own opinion about the matter any longer, but in accordance with Eph 5:11, I did realize I had to do something about it. After that experience with her in her early years, and my involvement with the real pro-life folks (a topic for a whole different discussion), I have learned what works, and what doesn't work. I will reiterate once again, the signs do work! I close with a quote made famous by I'm sure somebody, I just don't remember who. "Man was not created to govern himself. When he fails to obey God's laws and sets sail into the endless anarchy of human opinion, he risks extension." My opinion may not matter to many, but His Word should matter to us all. Thou shall not MURDER!

Speaking of Psycho-Babble....I am glad you are passionate about something in your life....at least you have something to focus on. But, I will ask again, please do the correct thing and do not display those pictures in an area where small children can see them? You DO NOT have the right to torment our CHILDREN!!!! I do not care what you choose to do with your grandchild, it's your business. I am concerned for the welfare of my child and the children in this community. I come from a fairly decent sized family, 2 brothers and one sister. My mom shared a lil information with me that she felt would help me raise my own two daughters. The more you impose your point of view on a subject to your child, the more they are likely to do the complete opposite. I've found this to be quite true looking back on my childhood. My point here, to the adults, the more you push this anti-abortion with disgusting visual effects, the more people are going to say "Poor Hillary". If we do not have any type of abortion clinics here in Beaufort, why expose anyone not just children to this type of advertisement? My girls are 16 and 12. They are old enough to where they know about the birds and bees. I've explained to them exactly what happens when having sex and the reprocusions of doing so. They are aware of birth control and that it is not 100%. I personally disagree with teens taking birth control. The way young adults think today, to me its an open inventation to have sex. Which in turn would result most likely in pregnancy. I feel it is up to the parents to decide when and where their children are educated in such subjects. I myself, as a single parent, have chosen open communication with my children. If they have a question that I am able to answer, it is answered with complete honesty.
If you want to protest Hillary then do so. The only thing that I am asking (as well as most of the bloggers here) let ME as the PARENT decide what MY child is exposed to.

Again, I don't think religion should play a role in politics. A comunity of people who are together in a church who believe in a certian thing might want to protest something that's okay, but what they are saying is because of their beliefs of how religious a canidate isn't, in this case that they don't want you to vote for her.

Hey, I just read all the post about this and Mr. McCoy. I say lets fight fire with fire. First we get his address and the locations of any future protest he plans on holding. Then we band together, make up disgusting signs of the Holicaust, Darfur, Iraq, the Inquisition, the Salem witch trials and any other horror that the radical Christians feel ok with and we protest them and thier homes until they see how we can educate thier children, grand-children and cousin in the basement. Years ago I had a run in with these types with Chris in the car with me. He was about 9 or 10. At that time I checked with the county about permits, obscenity laws, etc, to no avail.

the only bad thing about that is the kids and adults that would see it who are not part of this... Even that physco mr. Mcoy's kids and grandchildren should be spared...
