Fred Thompson stopping on Lady's Island

Fred Thompson, a sucker for good crab cakes, is planning a stop at Barbara Jean's on Lady's Island at 12:15 p.m. Saturday.
The Republican candidate for president plans to hold a town-hall style meeting at the restaurant.
Thompson needs a good showing in South Carolina to keep any White House hope alive.

I dunno - but something tells me there may not be many folks at this town hall whom are not also eating lunch . . . .

It's a shame, too, because he's been striking me, lately, as a seriously smart contender. Just doesn't have the "fire in the belly" I guess.

Thompson was an actor, and not a very good actor, before he decided to run for Senate and apparently his acting in Die Hard 2 [stack 'em, pack', and rack 'em] and his pretending to be smart on Law&Odor seems to have carried the day for him. Actors have been president before, and probably every one since JFK has been one, but his schtick seems to be "I may not be actually qualified to be President, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night' kind of candidacy.

opposed to the public display of graphic images should show up and ask if what he would do to stop others from displaying these images in the public eye for minors to see. hey there are all kinds of groups protesting graphic images on television and lyrics in music. we could do this., anyone on board?

Ian, your post says Fred will be at Barbara Jean's at 12:15. Another post here says 11:45. Does anybody out there know what time Fred's actually showing up?

I have nothing personal against Fred Thompson. Heck we probably have similar stances on most issues. My problem with him is the same problem I had with Ronald Reagan. He is an actor by trade. And the thing about actors, you never know when they're acting. Are they sincere or are they acting? You never know.
Or is honesty in spirit unimportant.
For single issue voters I can understand your flippancy towards depth of character. But for those of you professing to be ardent supporters of the Christian values you espouse, why isn't Mike Huckabee your candidate of choice.

Thompson is not a very good actor. His Law and Order role consisted of grunts, groans and grumpy facial expressions played off of Watterson and the other actors.

But Reagan didn't have a lot of depth as an actor either.

I share your wariness of actors, adracer1. It IS hard to tell when they're being sincere, because they're so good at acting that way. But I saw Fred Thompson Saturday - shook his hand and looked right in his eyes – and my take is that he's authentic. In fact, he may have been a little TOO authentic for some. His answers were very straightforward with zero pandering to anyone. His style is almost gruff, but I found him refreshing and likable. Also, as to his acting background... he got into acting when he was asked to play himself in a movie about a trial he had prosecuted. So, he kind of tumbled into it. No training or anything like that. If you watch him on Law & Order, you'll have a pretty good idea of what he's like in real life. He pretty much plays himself.

As for Huckabee... I have liked him for a long time, mainly because of his warm, witty personality and his comfort when talking about his faith. It's refreshing. HOWEVER, I think he's started going too far in that direction. His latest talk about "changing the constitution to reflect God's Law" - well, that's just stupid politics, first of all. Really, really tone deaf. It makes me fear he's not savvy enough to compete in the general election. Democrats aren't the only ones who believe in separation of church and state - plenty of conservatives feel the same way. Huckabee's wading into dangerous, "slippery slope" territory, now. I DO respect and like him, though, and I wish him well. I just think he may need some better advisors.

I haven't had the opportunity to study Huckabee's latest buzz.
I like Mike Huckabee but I musy admit my own hypocrisy here since I was first attracted to him as a political figure due to his weight loss and exercise regimen.
I still think Ron Paul is the man.

Huck's politics suck. As gov., he thought taxing was the solution to all problems. Christian or no Christian, that is tantamount to extortion.

Fred may not practice Christianity but he does acknowledge God.

I'm not saying Fred's my choice but let's get ALL the cards on the table.

Duncan Hunter would have been my choice but it looks like he's out of the race.

Satan acknowledges God.

Yeah, but his politics suck, too. ;-)

What would be an appropriate title for Satan's political party?
Be nice.
