The wrong kind of birdie

In one of the more bizarre stories of the week, professional golfer Tripp Isenhour was charged with cruelty to animals Wednesday after he intentionally smoked a hawk with a golf ball on a course in Orlando.
The Nationwide Tour player was filming some golf training thing and got angry after the noisy bird forced a retake. He started firing shots at it, and (after several attempts) eventually found his target. It killed the bird on the spot.

Spartanburg lost. Get over it.

In high school athletics, coaches ask their players to give their best effort. When that isn’t good enough, most console their players with a “we’ll get ‘em next time” pep talk or the “we just got beat by a team that wanted it more” speech.
Sometimes, coaches and fans like to take it a step further.
The most recent example of adults taking a game too seriously came Tuesday when two Spartanburg lawmakers sponsored a bill that would require officials to use television replays on close play.
It could lead to instant replay for high school sports in South Carolina.

So long Favre

Brett Favre called it quits Tuesday, ending an impressive 17-year career.
Thank God it’s finally over. As a lifelong Chicago Bears fan, I’m glad to see him go.
My memories of Favre are not fond ones.
I never liked him, but I used to respect him. That was before he started pulling all this on-again, off-again retirement talk each offseason. That was before he started crying after every game, in every news conference and during every interview.

Long John coming back to Beaufort County

On Thursday, John Daly announced his recreational vehicle will be making tracks back to Hilton Head Island for the upcoming Verizon Heritage golf tournament. With the likes of Daly and blue-collar favorites Boo Weekley and Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainy running around Harbour Town, this year's Heritage should be anything but dull.
Like many, my favorite guys on tour are the ones that make all the golf snobs cringe — the zero-to-hero types. Daly is near the top of the list because of all the great Long John stories and quotes out there.
