The Tom Davis tour

Tom Davis will make four stops throughout Beaufort County on Monday to formally announce his candidacy for the District 46 Senate seat.
Davis, a Republican who already has filed his election paperwork, will run against state Sen. Catherine Ceips.
Ceips, R-Beaufort, served in the state House from 2002-07 before taking her seat in the Senate after a special election.
Davis is a Beaufort attorney and formerly Gov. Mark Sanford’s chief of staff. He also served on the S.C. State Ports Authority’s board of directors.
The two will meet in a June primary.
Davis’ campaign will stop at:

Rodman nets endorsement in District 123 race

We’re a little late with this — you’ll have to forgive me, I was painting my son’s room over the weekend and was a little swamped, no pictures please! But anyway a group called S.C. Club for Growth has made an endorsement in the House District 123 race.
The club is backing Stu Rodman in his bid for the seat. The Republican incumbent is Richard Chalk. Chalk will face Rodman and former County Councilwoman Starletta Hairston in June’s Republican primary.

Here’s how the club describes itself on its Web site:

Semi-super Tuesday

Today is a (insert cliché here) day for Hillary Clinton.

It could be a make-or-break day. Or perhaps it's her last stand.
Can you even say that with a straight face when the Texas primary is the subject?

This is the headline on CNN.com right now: Another make-or-break, do-or-die primary day
Wow, CNN got a two for one on that deal.

Or maybe this is where she becomes the come back kid. Heck, it worked for Billy boy.

Or maybe, just maybe, this is where she starts to fade into bolivian. Thanks, Iron Mike.

S.C. House passes major immigration reform

The S.C. House on Wednesday passed major immigration reform.
There are some lofty goals and rules in this thing, some of which I think you'd be hard fought in regulating.
I especially like the section that says the feds will be billed the cost of housing illegal immigrants in county jails.
I wonder if anyone asked the feds if they'll mind being billed and if they have any intention of paying.
Take a look at it below and tell me what you think.
Best,
Ian

Political Pulse goes print

We wrote this for Friday's Beaufort Gazette.
But in case you missed it:

Dear Republican candidates,
Welcome to South Carolina.
Over there on your left are palmetto trees, not palm trees.
On your right is the Corridor of Shame, it’s where students in our state’s shabby, rickety schools try their best to reach federal standards that are practically unreachable.

Presidential campaigns come to Beaufort

A lot of candidates are stopping in town.
Here's what we got so far.

• John Edwards will be at Penn Center at 6:15 tonight
• Fred Thompson will be at Barbara Jean's on Lady's Island at noon Saturday
• Sen. John Warner will be at Blackstone's at 11:45 a.m. Sunday to campaign for John McCain.

An update on Cap Fendig

In case you missed it, Cap Fendig is a Georgia county commissioner who is running for president as a Republican.

He was in Beaufort last week, and was on the ballot in New Hampshire last night.

Here's the story I wrote about him:
http://www.beaufortgazette.com/local/story/129347.html

Well Cap received 12 votes, leaving him dead last among the 21 Republican candidates who received a vote, not including write-in votes.

Abortion signs — the rest of the story

As many of you know I wrote Wednesday's story about the anti-abortion signs that were seen around Beaufort County this week.

I believe the story was fair and showed both sides of the issue.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to speak with a representative from the group responsible for the signs until very late in the evening, and while I was able to include some of his comments, I couldn't research some of the things he told me.

I would like to share some more of what he said here on the blogs and get your reaction.

Fred Thompson stopping on Lady's Island

Fred Thompson, a sucker for good crab cakes, is planning a stop at Barbara Jean's on Lady's Island at 12:15 p.m. Saturday.
The Republican candidate for president plans to hold a town-hall style meeting at the restaurant.
Thompson needs a good showing in South Carolina to keep any White House hope alive.

Live from New Hampshire, it's Political Pulse

OK, so I'm early, but the last polls close in 11 minutes, and it's time to get this show on the road.

Here's what have I've learned so far tonight?
• McCain is wearing the same sweater that we wore and staying at the same hotel (even in the same room) he stayed in back when he won New Hampshire in 2000. You think he's wearing the same underwear?

• I've decided that when I hear Barack Obama's name said often enough it starts to sound like a European ice cream or a Greek pastry. Can't you imagine Candy Crowley saying: "I can't believe I ate all of that Barack Obama."
