A memorable 2nd grade

MEMORIES FROM A 2ND GRADE CLASS

The 2nd grade was a memorable time for me. My dad was stationed in Key West, Florida during WWII and we lived in Fort Taylor on base. The nearest school for dependents was a Catholic school run by nuns. Being a Methodist, I had some things to learn.

The nuns were very strict. This order must have not evolved since the 1500s when everyone punished themselves with pain for being so evil. I’ll bet each nun had stripes on her back and they weren’t sympathetic with wayward students either.

Male and female sports

On the Bluffton Today blog, posters are debating whether males or females are better at sports. Not being a sports fan, I don't know. But I thought it was time to post this letter that circulated some years ago:

LETTER FROM A FARM KID, NOW AT SAN DIEGO MARINE CORPS RECRUIT
Dear Ma and Pa,
I am well. Hope you are. Tell Brother Walt and Brother Elmer the Marine
Corps beats working for old man Minch by a mile. Tell them to join up
quick before all of the places are filled.

I was restless at first because you got to stay in bed till nearly 6 a.m.

Devil's Falls

Snopes has a new entry called Devil's Falls in Africa. Wow! Take a look at the photos:

Perceptions on gender

This is being passed around on the internet:

A Spanish Teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike
English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine.
>
> "House", for instance, is feminine: "la Casa."
>
> "Pencil," however, is masculine: "el lapiz.."
>
> A student asked, "What gender is 'computer'?"
>
> Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two
groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves
whether "computer" should be a masculine or a feminine noun.

Flower trail

Anyone else been riding around looking at the spring flowers? Beautiful right now with the azaleas and dogwoods. One "must see" is 120 North Hermitage Road. A real showpiece!

Coosa's annual Dr. Seuss Read across America

Celebrated on every March 2, Coosa's annual Read across America in honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday was a great success. Twenty-seven adults and 15 students were guest readers and greeters, which meant that every classroom at Coosa had a guest reader. Adults included members of the Kiwanis and Rotary clubs, some of Coosa's business partners, local church and community members, and parents. Students are members of the Kiwanis-sponsored K-Kids Club. A volunteer dressed in a Cat in the Hat costume visited each classroom, too.

Emancipation Proclamation

In Saturday's BG in the Opinion section, an article was posted about a Bill to celebrate Juneteenth. It may be a misprint, but in parenthesis it said that "The Emancipation Proclamation freed only those slaves in the states fighting with the Union."

Bible question

This was in our church newsletter and sharable:

Question: which of the noted women in the Bible was a good financier?

Answer: The daughter of Pharaoh. She went down to the Nile bank and made a small withdrawal. It would later become a great prophet.

A jail instead of Walmart

Since the county needs another site for additional jail space, how about putting it on Lady's Island instead of a Walmart? Good employment opportunities for the island economy and very little traffic impact. They could leave a vegetative barrier on the property lines to give the impression that it is still a wooded area for the wildlife.

Of course they might not need the whole 25 acres, but it would leave room for some small businesses. Call it the Jailhouse Mall. Catchy name!! Ought to create some incentive for shoppers.

Publix again?

According to a report by Lolita Huckaby, the county council has approved a zoning change that will allow a larger store at the Highway 21/Polawanna intersection. Since McBride, rep for St Helena approves of the supermarket at that location, we will probably see one there. I asked him about his vision, and he says that he still wants the island rural, but a "cluster development" at that location is acceptable.
