As 2005 nears an end, what are the best and worst examples of life in Beaufort County this year?

Best in 2005-seeing sunrises/sunsets reflecting off the rivers and waters. Worstin 2005-seeing sunrises/sunsets reflecting off the sea of cars waiting in front of me at the red lights. Having said that, the best far out weighs the worst.
For me, the worst is trying to get to Lady's Island from my home in Pigeon Point almost any time of day. The traffic literally crawls down Carteret Street and over the Woods Memorial Bridge. What should be a 2 minute drive becomes a 20 minute source of frustration. Oh, and once you get to Lady's Island, things don't improve much. So yeah, TRAFFIC is the Worst of Life in Beaufort, 2005! Traffic, and the simultaneous loss of the downtown AND Pigeon Point playgrounds. (Hell for us moms!)
But as egret57 says, the best far outweighs the worst. For me, the best would have to include: A Taste of Beaufort; Shrimp Festival; Night on the Town; the Christmas Parade; Beaufort Performing Arts at USCB; Lowcountry Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew;" ArtWalk downtown; my wonderful, eclectic, oak-shaded neighborhood (Pigeon Point); all the other beautiful neighborhoods... too much to name, really...
And one of the Best of 2005 has to be this Beaufort Gazette blog. It's like having a whole bunch of interesting new friends!
Yes, the worst part about Beaufort is most certainly the traffic delays in going to town from Lady's Island via the downtown route over the Woods Bridge.
The best part of Beaufort is its people - how nice to go shopping and be greeted by perfect strangers, doors held open, etc. Pleasantries abound, maybe that's why no horns blow for the Beaufort traffic delays?
LOL. :)
i'll have to get out the funk and wagnals dictonary to check that word. lololol
Please, do we really need spelling/typo police here?
As an English teacher, I have to get this in here: It's one thing on here to misspell/mispunctuate something here and there. It's another thing entirely if it makes the writer look illiterate. I wouldn't take such a person seriously.
Worstin-an example of new words formed when a space is left out between two words. It may be caused by the neglect of the writer, but in most cases it is a mysterious reduction or addition of 1's and 0's that form bytes. (Something took a byte out of the post)
This very common problem is also blamed on computer error and seems to be quite evident in this Beaufort Gazette blog. Other evidence of byte distortion causes mispelled words and lack of punctuation.
One may wonder where all of these 1's and 0's go. Check your credit balances in January.
Just curious Forrest, how many Yankees did you find "in them woods?"
LOL is internet slang, an abbreviation for "Lots of Laughs".
We all needed that! It also means LAUGHING OUT LOUD!!!!
CHRISTy CHRISTy good time to you!!!
Agreed! Our natural surroundings here are spectacular. I also agree with Elida's statement about the pleasantries that abound here; as a Southerner by birth, I am proud to say to others I meet from all over the country that Southern hospitality is truly a concept we should all appreciate.
As for the worst of this past year, let us not forget the families displaced and forever affected by Katrina. I personally am still making charitable donations to assist in the recovery efforts, as all of us should if we can afford to.
Its a warm late July day and its sunny where you are standing. You are looking out across the salt marsh when the sky turns purple in the distance with repeated flashes of bright light illumenessing the horizon. Its now a silver wall of heavy rain with cracks of thunder and its comming strait at you but its still dry and sunny where you are standing, in awe of the thunder-clappers unparralelled beauty.
A former Beaufort County Sheriff's Office deputy working for a private security company in Iraq suffered multiple injuries last week when a vehicle he was riding in hit a roadside bomb, according to representatives with the security company.
"Tim Newman has been working for DynCorp International as an Iraqi police trainer and was in one of three motorcade vehicles when the explosion occurred, said Gregory Lagana, vice president of communications for the company.
The accident occurred Friday in Baghdad, not far from the compound where some DynCorp International employees live, he said."
The BEST was seeing him in rehab with his family around him and his infectious smile that lets all that know him, catch our breath and know that we have NOT been cheated from living with a man who gives, gives and keeps on giving. Tim is the Energizer Bunny of giving to those in need.
Thank you Newman for reminding me "that which doesn't kill us makes us stronger"!!!
Here here Assorted, Now its my chance to return the compliment " U R GUD " My thanks to Tim and all the other men and women who have sacrificed for the war on terror.
No hurricanes hit & energy prices more than doubled. On the bad side, war takes its tolls on soldiers and the economy.
Driving in from Augusta last night at midnight the moon on Factory Creek was spectacular. There is always an ooh and ahh here to welcome you home. The traffic at midnight certainly makes it easier to enjoy the view from the Woods Bridge.
Best and worst of 2005 -
Where are the traffic cameras for Rt. 21 in Beaufort and thru Lady's Island, and for Sams Point Rd?
How can our local governments and elected representatives neglect this part of Beaufort County so completely in regard to its traffic?
Certainly not the worst of life in 2005, but a disappointing event in the lives of those around Beaufort is the discontinuation of the 5:30 PM evening news show on WJWJ TV. Granted, in recent years there has been less news reporting, and more interviews, way to much on the "arts" subject for my taste, but it was still a local news show, something which my northern relatives did not have and for which I was very proud that my little Southern town of choice had something so unique.
I was a viewer from the first night with Suzanne Larson doing the show.
I've read that part of the justification for dropping the show was that we are served, now, by three local newspapers. I wonder what those three papers are supposed to be that would be relevant for the city of Beaufort and its suburbs?? We used to have the "Carolina Morning News" before it was discontinued and replaced with a newspaper which is entirely reporting Bluffton news.
Thank Heavens for the "Beaufort Gazette"!
In my own humble opinion our city has the best of everything.
The best little Greek restaurant is across from Beaufort Hospital. Hidden in traffic as it is one would think it just a little building holding nothing of value. Maria is the owner/cook. The best import from Greece we have ever had.
The best people come to Beaufort. We have people from the world here. All types exist side by side. One day we will have the best of all cultures if this continues.
The best views exist in Beaufort. Who cannot look out on the downtown marina on a foggy morning while standing on the bluff we call Bay Street and not see beauty.
Have you seen a formation of Pelicans do a flyover of the marsh at sunrise with clouds floating in the distance? What beauty to behold.
The best of the best is Beaufort.
2005 in Beaufort was the best. 2006 in Beaufort will beat the best.
Very Respectfully,
JoeWayne Watson
Worst first -- our inept and incapable school board. If they ever give us some real input and stop trying to persuade residents to believe they know what they're doing, it'll be a miracle. Edna Crews was supposed to be the new broom. Snort.
Best last -- the glorious low country that surrounds us wherever we look, any time of the year.
